9–12 Days
Difficulty
Challenging (longer approach)
Moderate (shorter access to trail)
Trip Introduction
A long road trip to Everest Base Camp via Jiri or Phaplu creates two separate options, as opposed to the Lukla flight option.
The Jiri option is the original classic route which was followed by the first climbers to ever scale Everest, along a long trek traversing pristine Sherpa and Tamang villages, and all that this entails.). This makes it a fun route, Like Jiri with its road access you may be acclamated better as it is a steady incline on the way up, but with trekking migration you would add several extra days most likely.
While the Phaplu option is shorter by car and traversed through the lower first half of the trek by car, it is the best option for travellers to be able to make this road trip option and do the majority of the original classic Everest trek. In fact, the trail where the two routes merge or meet the Lukla route would then be either via Paiya or Lukla.
