The December trek is suited for adventure seekers who relish solitude and the best panoramic view and connection to the Himalayas in Manaslu. A December trek for 2026, 2027, and 2028 in the Manaslu circuit trekking trail is guaranteed to be the safest and most incredible one with the assistance of Mountain Rock Treks.
Why December is Becoming the New Best Season for the Manaslu Circuit Trek
Less crowd, Peaceful Trails in December
Far fewer trekkers than Spring and Autumn seasons
Quiet tea houses, more private space on the trails
Closer interaction with local guides and people
More laid-back trek, no rush for the day's walk
December has now started turning out as one of the best months for trekking the Manaslu Circuit, as it has a rarity that very few people notice in the Himalayas - peace and silence. Throughout December, the trails rarely have any crowds, unlike the Spring and Autumn seasons. The consequence is that you'll have the actual peace in the lap of the mountains with an intimate chat with the locals, nature, and your guides. Tea houses also remain comparatively quiet, and you will enjoy a comfortable, warm experience while trekking.
Best Accommodation Experience Even in Cold December Weather
Comfortable and available lodges throughout the lower and mid-altitude sections
Warm hospitality due to low tourist flow
Clean and less congested dining areas
Cozy Winter experience within the teahouses
While December is one of the coldest months, accommodation facilities still stand firm on the lower and mid-altitude sections. Because there is a scarcity of tourists, the lodge owners devote most of their time to tending to every trekker and providing them with the best services they can offer. Every teahouse has warm fires that will offer comfort to you, and you will enjoy a warm, cozy winter, while outside, the cold winds will still be freezing.
Clear Blue Skies and Best Winter Mountain Views
Extremely clear Himalayan visibility
Clear blue skies almost throughout your trekking period
Magnificent views of Manaslu, Himalchuli and the other prominent peaks
Year-round best photography environment
A clear blue sky and a good view are what trekking in the Manaslu Circuit in December is known for. Because the monsoon has wiped all the dust out of the atmosphere, the visibility in December trekking has generally been very clear, and you will experience one of the best crisp views of the Himalayas. In December, you also have one of the best photo opportunities for the Manaslu Circuit, and its surrounding picturesque mountain ranges like Himalchuli, Bichel Himal and many others.
Cooler But Stable Winter Conditions
Dry weather with a negligible amount of rainfall or snow on the lower and mid sections of the trail.
Predictable trekking conditions throughout your travel dates in early/mid-December
Stable trail conditions across most sections
Fewer weather disruptions than the monsoon. December trekking in the Manaslu Circuit will guarantee you cold and steady weather throughout. This means you won't be surprised by unexpected rainfall or very cold winds, as usually happens during the monsoon. The predictability will make your trek a much easier and safer one.
Value for Money in December Departures
Competitive prices for trek packages
Great flexibility in lodge negotiations
Less pressure on the entire system in the off-season
Excellent value for the organized guided treks
December is a highly cost-effective way to complete the Manaslu Circuit trek. Being the off-season, you will be surprised by the relatively reasonable price ranges of trek packages offered by many agencies. There are also many opportunities to have favorable negotiations for accommodation charges in the lodges due to low footfall.
Manaslu Circuit Trek Weather and Temperature in December (Week-by-Week Guide)
Week 1: Kathmandu to Dharamsala (1350m to 4460m)
A trekker's journey into Manaslu during the first week of December is generally pleasant, especially lower in altitude than Kathmandu and towards Deng. The daytime is generally mild with bright, clear skies, with not much rain or moisture present at the lower elevations. However, the nights tend to become significantly colder with increasing altitude, but remain pleasant for the most part for trekkers.
Beyond Namrung, the day becomes significantly colder with frost appearing each morning and refreshing mountain air, along with an excellent opportunity to view the stunning landscapes of the valleys and the initial Himalayan peaks, while the days are relatively predictable at this point.

Week 2: Kathmandu to Dharamsala (1350m to 4460m)
During mid-December, the Manaslu circuit tends to have more winter characteristics, but trekking is still highly possible and still active. Dry days and sunny days at lower and mid altitudes are observed, though days are colder than early December in the mornings and nights.
Air turns cold and dry as one moves from Jagat, Deng to Namrung and Lho, and the possibility of light snowfall exists at higher stages. While days are still clear in villages like Samagaon and Samdo, nights are colder and can reach below freezing point. The views of the mountains are fantastic with sharp and clear visibility due to low humidity, which adds up as one of the great parts of this month.

Week 3: Kathmandu to Dharamsala (1350m to 4460m)
The second half of December marks the coldest part of the month, and the mountain air feels a lot more like the height of winter at altitudes over 3000m. While the lower sections of trek remain relatively pleasant during the day, you will face several sub zero nights and increased wind chill at Lho, Samagaon, Samdo and above. There is a greater probability of snowfall, but usually only at the highest exposed alpine passes, and for the time of year, this rarely causes any serious trouble unless you get caught in a long spell of bad weather.
The air is remarkably clean and dry, and mountain visibility is excellent; the landscape is a spectacular, stark contrast of mountains, light, and shadow. It's possible to trek, however, and you'll want plenty of warm clothing and be prepared for chilly mornings and potentially frosted trekking trails. Early signs of winter snow appear across the landscape.

Week 4: Kathmandu to Dharamsala (1350m to 4460m)
By the end of December, winter is definitely upon the Manaslu circuit, especially in the higher regions toward Samdo and Dharamsala. The lower reaches have mild daytime temperatures, but the higher regions and passes get below freezing during the day, with the cold becoming significantly more acute at night.
Snow is visible on the trail above Lho and Shyala, with windy and cold sections around Larkya La. However, between the weather systems, there are often dry spells, and conditions remain clear enough for a confident trekker with appropriate clothing. Overall, the landscape presents the stereotypical picture of Himalayan winter: clear sky, snow-covered peaks, and a very low humidity level, which makes for very good and rewarding trekking if you have the correct clothing.

December is a Winter Month But What Changed Now Making it Better Trekking Experience Than Spring and Autumn Manaslu Circuit Trekking?
December falls within the winter months in the Manaslu Circuit, and in recent years the winter season has made December a surprisingly enjoyable alternative to the traditional trekking seasons. The subtle climatic shifts and the generally milder winters have resulted in much more stable conditions early to mid-December, which has meant a reduction in random snowfall, and increased days with blue skies over the Himalayas.
Trekkers will experience the benefit of great mountain views and a less slippery and safer route in early winter before the heavy mid-January snows hit.
The second great advantage is the complete absence of other trekkers on the circuit, the busy conditions of the autumn and spring trekking seasons replaced with completely clear paths, and available lodging with a more tranquil, intimate trekking experience.
Although spring and autumn may offer some finer views over the Manaslu Circuit, December currently provides the best balance between beautiful mountain sights, accessible lodging, and solitude from the masses of trekkers, rendering December one of the most authentic ways to experience the Manaslu Circuit.
Trekking Crowd Density Comparison (Real Impact on Experience)
Season | Avg. Daily Trekkers on Trail | Lodge Occupancy Rate | Group Congestion Level |
December | 20 - 60 trekkers | 30% - 50% | Very Low |
Spring (Mar - May) | 150 - 300 trekkers | 90% - 100% | Very High |
Autumn (Sep - Nov) | 200 - 400 trekkers | 95% - 100% | Extremely High |
The most definite and measurable difference between trek seasons will perhaps be the number of trekkers and the density. Trekkers in December have numbers as low as 30%-15% ( peak season respectively)- the lesser number will bring about a better trekking experience, no queues at the tea houses and dinner area, and more interaction time with locals. It will be otherwise in spring and autumn, when the lodges are packed, and the trails are busy, especially through Namrung, Samagaon and Samdo.
Temperature Pattern Comparison Across Key Altitudes
Altitude Zone | December Day Temp | December Night Temp | Spring Day Temp | Autumn Day Temp |
800m - 1500m | 16°C - 22°C | 5°C - 10°C | 20°C - 28°C | 18°C - 25°C |
2000m - 3500m | 6°C - 12°C | -2°C - -8°C | 10°C - 18°C | 8°C - 15°C |
3500m - 4500m | 0°C - 7°C | -8°C - -15°C | 5°C - 12°C | 3°C - 10°C |
It is estimated that December will be around 5 C - 10 C colder than the spring and autumn, but it is the crisp cold weather that adds to the quality of the view. It will also be a lot less dusty and hazy in December, so the mountains will appear in high definition. Spring will be warm but misty, while there will still be dusty lower valleys as the post-monsoon dust might still be hanging around in autumn.
Weather Stability & Trek Success Rate
Season | Weather Stability Score (10) | Snow Disruption Risk | Trek Completion Success Rate |
December | 8.5/10 | Low - Moderate (late month) | 90%+ |
Spring | 9/10 | Very Low | 95%+ |
Autumn | 9.5/10 | Very Low | 97%+ |
December is now considered more stable than previously thought, especially in early and mid-month. Heavy snowfall usually begins after mid-January, meaning most December treks complete successfully. Compared to spring and autumn, December is slightly more demanding but still highly reliable.
Cost Efficiency & Service Availability
Season | Trek Package Cost (Avg) | Lodge Price Level | Guide Availability |
December | $900 - $1200 | Low - Moderate | High availability |
Spring | $1200 - $1600 | High | Medium availability |
Autumn | $1300 - $1800 | Very High | Low availability |
It appears to be a lot more reliable than expected, particularly at the start and middle of the month. Heavy snow doesn't normally fall till after mid-January, so trekking to nearly all December itineraries will be successfully completed. December is considered to be more physically challenging than spring and autumn; however, its reliability can't be denied.
Visibility & Photography Quality Index
Season | Visibility Score (10) | Sky Clarity Days (%) | Photo Quality Rating |
December | 9.5/10 | 85% - 90% | Excellent |
Spring | 8.5/10 | 75% - 80% | Very Good |
Autumn | 9/10 | 80% - 85% | Excellent |
Due to the dry air in winter, the photos of the Himalayas we shot in December were some of the clearest photographs of the Himalayas in the whole year. The view of mountains, such as Manaslu, Himalchuli and Ngadi Chuli, was more defined than on many of the hazy spring days.
Does Larkya La Pass Remain Open in December?
Yes, Larkya La Pass (5,160m) remains open in December, especially in the early and mid trekking windows in this month. According to recent trekking experience, abundant snowfall happens from mid-January, and the snow amount would not be as bad as people can imagine before that time.
In fact, at the beginning of December, the weather conditions can be stable with less snow accumulated on the trail. It would be safe to pass the Larkya La Pass with proper equipment and an experienced guide. Some snow will fall when crossing the pass from 4,000m higher.
In recent years, with changing weather and climate patterns, snowfall conditions have become more predictable; there is less snow on the pass in December compared to the assumption. So, many trekkers can still successfully cross Larkya La pass in December.
How Cold is Larkya La Pass in December?
Year | Day Temperature (°C) | Night / Early Morning (°C) | Snow Condition | Overall Cold Level |
2022 | -8°C to 2°C | -18°C to -12°C | Moderate snow, frequent icy sections | Very Cold |
2023 | -6°C to 3°C | -16°C to -10°C | Moderate snow, more stable trail | Cold |
2024 | -5°C to 3°C | -14°C to -9°C | Light to moderate snow | Cold but manageable |
2025 | -4°C to 4°C | -13°C to -8°C | Light snow, clearer trail conditions | Moderately Cold |
2026 (trend) | -3°C to 5°C | -12°C to -7°C | Light patchy snow, mostly dry trail | Bearably Cold |
It is very cold in Larkya La pass (5160 m) in December, but these days it's much more acceptable than its previously renowned hellish winter status. Though it is cold, it is much more tolerable compared to what we were used to with usual winter conditions, which is largely due to slightly shifting winter weather patterns and steadier conditions during the start of the season. We can stand cold temperature on this elevation, but it depends on where we are and how equipped we are, especially at the beginning of December.
The temperature at the pass normally falls between -5 and +3 C during the day while crossing Larkya, subject to the weather and sunlight. But due to its elevation and wind chill factor, it really feels much colder than the normal readings, especially in open areas. During early morning at 4 to 5 am, when we usually start, it may fall down to -10 to -15 C during ascent.
Many trekkers state that December winter is becoming milder compared to the olden days, with much less unpredictable snow accumulation and more stable dry air mass. A large accumulation of snowfall typically occurs in January rather than in December.
Doable Day Hikes and Side Trips That Make Your December Manaslu Trek Even Better
Manaslu Base Camp (From Samagaon)
Distance: ~7 - 8 km one way
Time: 6 - 7 hours round trip
Starting point: Samagaon (3,520m)
Highest point: ~4,800m
Trail type: Rocky, glacier-view alpine trail
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
Season condition (December): Dry trail, cold but stable weather
One of the most unforgettable day hikes from Samagaon. The trek gradually leads uphill through a mix of rocky alpine and grazing land to Manaslu Base Camp, where you should find a few patches of snow. In December, the trail will be mostly clear, and the cold air will be crisp, providing fantastic views of the Himalayas. If dressed in layers and wearing boots with decent grips, this hike is very doable. You'll experience huge glacier chunks, rock slides from Manaslu's sheer 8163 m high south face, which make for an awe-inspiring, humbling experience: 'a huge space with only you and this incredible power', as one trekker described, 'you're in awe and very small'. Coming back, you'll be giddy and thrilled by your achievement and the powerful Himalayan atmosphere.
Samdo Border Day Hike (Tibetan Viewpoint Ridge)
Distance: ~5 - 6 km one way
Time: 4 - 5 hours round trip
Starting point: Samdo (3,875m)
Highest point: ~5,000m ridge
Trail type: Gradual uphill alpine desert trail
Difficulty: Moderate (high altitude, thin air)
Season condition (December): Cold, dry, low snow in early season
The Samdo Border trek is an easy though strenuous little side trip right at the edge of Tibet, beginning with a brief walk from the village of Samdo up to a large and open alpine plateau without trees. The chances of stable and clear weather with no atmospheric interference from moisture are generally good at this time of year; thus, there were expansive views of the Himalayas.
There is an immense and overwhelming feeling of space and distance at the viewpoint on the ridge right at the edge of Tibet- hills, wind, and mountains roll on as far as the eye can see; one feels as though standing at the very end of the earth and is humbled by this overwhelming space. This trek also serves to acclimatize for the big Larkya La pass, which is just ahead.
Why Wildlife Sightings Increase on the Manaslu Circuit Trek in December?
The opportunities to encounter wildlife on Manaslu Circuit trek during December have increased for two main reasons. The wildlife of the higher Himalayas is seasonal in altitude as well as time of year and during the coldest of the winter months all species that inhabit higher areas of the Himalayas migrate downwards into the forest valleys for food and survival.
Now they are at lower levels within the trek in the area between Deng, Namrung and Samagaon, and this means you stand a good chance of encountering some of these species at a lower altitude, on the actual trek route. Less people will also be present on the trek in December, giving you more chances of encountering animals without disturbing them. Animals such as Himalayan Tahr, and musk deer along with even some rare predators will now have migrated into the valleys so December will be good for spotting some inhabitants of this area.
December creates a natural wildlife corridor throughout Manaslu, the high altitude animals migrate downwards where the prey species have also been forced to and also predators are following animals along the route and will often be present where animals have already begun migrating along the route that passes through the relevant areas. That's why not only will Manaslu treks in winter provide you with an incredible mountain experience but also more chances of observing actual Himalayan wildlife. The early and mid-December periods will be the most productive for spotting the animals of the Himalayas due to the sparsely trekked areas.
Common Wildlife Sightings in December (Manaslu Region)
The potential Wildlife in December (Manaslu):
The Himalayan Tahr-you will most likely spot them in the steep rocky areas, closer to forests.
The Musk Deer-these usually appear in tranquil parts of the alpine forest region, mostly in the early morning.
The Himalayan Blue Sheep (Bharal)-these species mostly come down to lower altitudes during the winter.
The Himalayan Black Bear-these are very rarely seen but can be spotted in the parts inside the forest.
The Snow Leopard-these are very rarely spotted species; normally, they come down to lower altitudes to search for prey during the winter.
The Himalayan Marmot-they inhabit the grassy fields of Manaslu just before they sleep for the winter, making them one of the few animals you might see.
The Red Panda-you will be very rarely able to spot these, mostly in and around densely populated forests like the ones around the Namrung zone.
The Himalayan Monal (National Bird of Nepal)-this can be easily spotted near forest borders; it's a brightly colored bird.
Why Accommodation is Often Better in December Than During Peak Season
December is a more satisfying month to travel on the Manaslu Circuit trek than during the peak seasons of Spring or Autumn, due to a significantly lower volume of traffic on the trail and also because the vast majority of the lodges will still be open. With fewer trekkers on the trail, you will likely find more room within the tea houses, you are more likely to have an undisturbed sleep, and you are also more likely to find that there is more individual service being provided. The essential services provided by all lodges (food and shelter) will remain open even in the most isolated villages, particularly in the early part of December when the trail is still frequented by trekkers.
While accommodation in the most popular trekking seasons may involve a considerable amount of pre-booking and a relatively high noise level during mealtimes, December is characterized by a relaxed and more comfortable atmosphere within the tea houses. The lodge owners have the capacity to offer more individual attention, the warmth of the kitchen area is a welcome sensation, as is the ease with which a bed can be found. There is a considerable presence of open lodges on the main circuit trek even in the winter, including up to Samagaon and Samdo in the early to middle part of December. Only at the higher altitude points, such as Dharamsala, will the lodges possibly start to close further into winter.
Benefits of accommodation on the Manaslu Circuit in December (in comparison to spring and autumn)
More available rooms throughout nearly all villages
Quieter lodges due to lower numbers of trekkers and absence of crowds
Faster and individual service in tea houses
Better availability of private or superior rooms
More flexibility on meals and menu
Better sleeping arrangements due to low occupancy of the room
What to Pack for the Manaslu Circuit Trek in December (Do You Really Need Extra Winter Gear?)
Packing for the December Manaslu Circuit Trek involves a mixture of warmth, layering, and practicality. December is technically winter, but recent years have seen less harsh winter conditions and more predictable weather along some lower and mid-routes of the trek. Winter clothing is required, but there is none of the deep winter mountaineering that might be anticipated.
The core principle to follow for the December Manaslu Circuit Trek is to wear layers: the weather will vary from quite warm during trekking at lower altitudes (Machha Khola and Jagat) and freeze solid at higher altitudes (above Samagaon and Samdo), particularly mornings and evenings. This means you need a strong layering system: a base layer, insulating mid layers, and weatherproof outer layers.
At Larkya La Pass (5160m), sub-zero temperatures are quite expected, but reports from recent treks indicate clear skies and consistent snow levels from early December onwards, allowing for reasonable trekking on this particular stretch of the Manaslu Circuit Trek.
Essential Packing List for December Manaslu Trek
Thermal base layers (top and bottom)
Warm fleecy jacket/mid-layer jacket
Serious down jacket (suitable down to at least -10C or -15C)
Waterproof and windproof outer jacket
Waterproof trekking trousers plus some kind of base layer or long johns to wear under the trousers
Gloves (suitable warm gloves and perhaps thin gloves to wear over the top in extreme conditions)
Warm winter hat plus neck gaiter or scarf
Sunglasses (you really need to take UV protective ones, the sun at altitude with snow glare is brutal)
Sturdy waterproof trekking boots
A decent winter-rated sleeping bag (very important, especially at altitude overnight)
Trekking poles (an absolute must to aid stability when walking on icy or slippery trails)
Sunscreen and lip balm (sun at altitude is very strong, even when the weather is not hot)
Do You Really Need Extra Winter Gear?
Yes, but not extremely specialized gear. Given the diminishing snowfall on lower sections of the trek in early December in comparison to previous years, what you might deem standard winter high-altitude trekking gear should be enough. Expedition quality mountaineering equipment is not required, but having a very warm sleeping bag for altitudes over 3500m, where you may be trekking overnight, is absolutely critical. Trekking Manaslu in December now appears to be less about extreme winter mountaineering and more about sensible layering and managing the cold effectively.
