Lhasa Sightseeing With Tibet Everest Base Camp Tour

The Tibet Everest Base Camp tour 2026 is one of the ultimate overland tours in the Himalayas. It encompasses ancient Tibetan culture, Buddhist monasteries, highlands and the closest of any view you can possibly get of Mt Everest from the north Base Camp, situated at 5000m above sea level. The 8-day trek designed from Lhasa to Kerung through Shigatse is modeled along the original Himalayan overland circuit.

The trip is planned to start at Lhasa, where one can experience altitude acclimation and visit all the major attractions there: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Drepung monastery, Sera monastery-all are a part of the World Heritage sites. Not only are they masterpieces of architecture, but they are still very lively centers of Tibetan Buddhism, with the same routines like lighting butter lamps, chanting scriptures and monks debating, as they were practiced centuries ago.

As the itinerary travels west, you cross holy lakes such as Yamdrok, high mountain passes such as Gyatso La and Gawu La and historic cities such as Gyantse and Shigatse. With each destination comes a new dimension to Tibetan culture, whether it be life on the Steppes or many years of scholastic tradition within the monasteries.

The apex of the journey, the Rongbuk Monastery (the highest in the world), overlooking Everest's striking north face silhouetted above the plateau, is particularly magical at sunrise and sunset. Travelling back down the Tibetan plateau from the route through Kerung completes your trans-Himalayan experience, where a perfect combination of adventure and spirit meet to give you a once-in-a-lifetime high altitude journey. The 2026 itinerary provides you with a safe and meaningful way to experience the Tibet Everest expedition.

Why Choose the Tibet Side Everest Base Camp Tour?

Tibet Everest Base Camp Tour offers a wholly alternative experience to the Nepal side and is perfect for travellers looking for comfort, accessibility and magnificent panoramic Himalayan views. Unlike the 10-14 day full trek to the Nepal EBC, travelers to Everest Base Camp via the Tibetan side will journey overland through Lhasa, Shigatse and Rongbuk Monastery and access to Everest Base Camp without the rigors of trekking, though still at an altitude of approximately 5000m.

The greatest advantage of visiting the north face of Mount Everest via Tibet is unobstructed panoramic views and more sweeping perspectives on Mount Everest, as compared to the southern view. Traveling through the terrain is interspersed with fascinating Buddhist cultural, ancient monasteries and spiritual ceremonies such as kora, burning of butter lamps and the chanting of monks at Tashilhunpo and Rongbuk Monastery. Besides comfortable transportation, travelers on this trip have less physical exertion with fixed schedules, access to high altitude monasteries and holy lakes, which can also be visited on the trip.

Overall, the Tibet Everest Base Camp trip will be best suited for travellers hoping to immerse themselves in Tibetan culture with overland journeys and phenomenal Everest vistas.

Check-in to the Tibet tour after which your Everest Base Camp Tour 2026 begins with the awesome flight of the Himalayas from Kathmandu to Lhasa. Clear weather offers impressive views of Mount Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and many other mountains in the Himalayas. After arriving at Gonggar Airport, your Tibetan guide will welcome you at the airport and then drive you to your hotel in Lhasa.

During the flight, the landscape and the Tibetan plateau, you will see prayer flags, Buddhist stupas, beautiful old villages located at the foot of the mountain, etc. Lhasa (The Place of Gods) has been the political and spiritual center of Tibet for over thirteen centuries. After checking into the hotel, you can relax or get adjusted to the high altitude.

Since the altitude is suddenly higher, drink more water, do less activity, eat a soft meal at dinner time, and have a short walk near the hotel to have a glimpse of Tibetan culture, people wearing traditional clothing, etc. Dinner will be in one of the restaurants in town, and afterwards we will go back to the hotel and sleep.

  • Hotel in Lhasa
  • Breakfast
  • 1.5–2 hrs
  • 3,650m

Following a morning meal at the hotel, dive into Lhasa's rich culture with a visit to Drepung Monastery. Situated about 8km from the city, the monastery usually opens from 09:00 to 16:00, and is accessed in a continuous circuit taking in assembly halls, courtyards and monk living spaces. Once the largest in the world, with 10,000+ monks, it remains a vital centre of Gelug Buddhism, and your guide will show you the daily workings and rituals of butter lamp offering, chanting sessions and prayer circles. The concept of monastic discipline and the monastery's historic importance in Tibetan administration and education will be discussed.

Later, after lunch, journey to Sera Monastery, which can be visited from 14:30-17:00, so that you may observe the daily monk debate, which takes place from 15:00-17:30 (daily except Sunday). This can be one of the most unusual living experiences in Tibet, where young monks engage in animated philosophical debates using clapping, gestures and logic in their religious education.

Finally, return to your Lhasa hotel for a relaxing evening or a bit of independent exploration of the immediate neighbourhood.

Overnight in Lhasa.

  • Hotel in Lhasa
  • Breakfast
  • 6–8 hrs
  • 3,650m

After breakfast, today is a great introduction to the great Tibetan monastic universities. First, we will explore Drepung Monastery, one of the largest monasteries in the world. Founded in 1416, it was at its peak one of the most important Buddhist sites in Tibet and supported a population of more than ten thousand monks. From a distance, it appears to be a white city spread out across a mountainside overlooking Lhasa Valley, and here we can examine monks' dwellings, assembly halls, Buddhist texts and schools as well as meditation and prayer chapels.

Following a lunchtime and afternoon excursion to Sera Monastery, which was founded in 1419. Sera became renowned for the Monk debate that takes place every afternoon, where hundreds of monks gather in a large courtyard and furiously debate Buddhist philosophy with one another using elaborate hand gestures, applause and reasoning. These debates are extremely interesting to witness, and they offer an amazing window into traditional Tibetan education that is still practiced today. Many travellers find this experience a definite cultural highlight of their trip to Tibet. Overnight and dinner in Lhasa.

  • Hotel in Lhasa
  • Breakfast
  • 6–8 hrs
  • 3,650m

After breakfast, depart from Lhasa and begin what will be one of the most scenic drives of the tour through the Tibetan plateau. The route slowly ascends to Kamba La Pass at an elevation of 4,794m, providing expansive, breathtaking views over the vast Tibetan Plateau.

It is the stunning Yamdrok Lake, the spiritual destination for Tibetans, that provides one of the highlights of the day. It is regarded as one of the four sacred lakes of Tibet and is home to one of the most frequently photographed views of Tibet, as its intensely turquoise waters span endlessly below snow-capped mountains. Tibetan folklore considers it a spiritual guardian for the communities that live near it.

Travelers frequently stop here for photos while taking in views of wandering nomads, yaks and local Tibetan settlements scattered throughout the valley.

Travelers also cross Karo La Pass, which has its glaciers descending steeply from nearby peaks, and during this leg of the journey, travelers will be taken through Tibet's religious and historical significance by their guide.

Upon arriving in Gyantse during the afternoon, travelers may get to see the ancient old town and marketplace where Gyantse was once a prominent trading post between Tibet, Nepal and India. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and stay the night at your hotel in Gyantse.

  • Hotel in Gyantse
  • Breakfast
  • 4–5 hrs drive with sightseeing stops
  • 3,950m

After an early breakfast, explore Gyantse's main holy landmark, Kumbum Stupa, which is generally open from 09:00-18:30. It is considered one of the most impressive stupas in Tibet and is also a great example of Tibetan Buddhist architecture. You can enter and wander through its corridors filled with murals, Buddhas, mandalas, and other protective deities. The kora you perform around it is a sacred pilgrimage of sorts, symbolizing spiritual ascent to enlightenment.

You may also have a look at the Palkhor Monastery, which is generally open from 09:00-17:00. Here, at the unique complex of three different sects of Tibetan Buddhism together, travelers can see the Puja, which are the morning and evening prayer services, as well as the offering of butter lamps and scriptures. At the main assembly hall, you can watch the monks praying in the morning or during evening Puja.

Then it's back on the road to continue our overland trip to Shigatse through barley fields and wide valleys. At noon, stop at a local restaurant for a nice meal before continuing to check into your hotel in Shigatse and relax.

Spend the night in Shigatse.

  • Hotel in Shigatse
  • Breakfast
  • 3–4 hrs drive With sightseeing
  • 3,900m

One of the most enjoyable days of the entire Tibet Everest Base Camp Tour. After an early breakfast, explore Tashilhunpo Monastery which is traditionally the home of the Panchen Lama and one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in Tibet, which is generally open from 09:00-17:00. Founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama, it became one of the largest centers of learning for the Buddhist religion in Tibet and is still an important pilgrimage site today as it still receives pilgrims who continuously perform the kora and offer their butter lamps as they spin the prayer wheels at the stupas.

The architecture is awe-inspiring, as you will also get to see some imposing Buddha statues, golden roofs, and the chanting halls filled with monks in prayer.

Then begin the spectacular overland trip to Everest, crossing the Gyachukla Pass at around 5,200m, where you'll catch your first distant views of Mt Everest and neighboring peaks in the Himalayas.

Later in the afternoon, you will arrive at Rongbuk Monastery, situated below the northern slope of Everest. It is one of the highest monasteries in the world and the primary spiritual sanctuary for many visitors trekking up to Everest Base Camp since it was founded in 1902.

A short trek will lead to Everest Base Camp, where the view of Mount Everest is quite simply astounding. If the weather is good, you will be given the first chance to see the top of Everest from here, along with the surrounding peaks. Dinner at the monastery and stay the night at a guesthouse near the Everest Base Camp.

  • Guesthouse at Rongbuk
  • Breakfast
  • 7–8 hrs drive
  • 4,980m

This morning is arguably the best time of day to visit Everest, and you will be given one of the most spiritual moments on the tour as you view Everest as it starts to become lit up by the sun to give a beautiful spectacle and photo opportunity as its colors change across the north face.

After a simple breakfast, you will begin your journey back to Kerung, crossing wide plateaus which may be called the "Roof of the World" while keeping a lookout for views of Mt Everest, Cho Oyu and Shishapangma, which will always be visible from a distance.

Another incredible sight will be the natural beauty of the Peiku Tso Lake, surrounded by snowy peaks, where you can even find reflections of the Himalayas in the water.

As you continue along your journey, you will gradually begin to see the harsh Tibetan plateau transforming into verdant hills as you head towards the Nepal border, before finally arriving in Kerung, where you will be staying for the night in a comfortable hotel.

  • Hotel in Kerung
  • Breakfast
  • 6–8 hrs drive
  • 2,700m

After a satisfying breakfast at your hotel, you will continue on towards the Tibetan border. On this stage of your tour, you will travel through beautiful deep valleys and have the chance to take some incredible pictures of high mountains and rivers that flow through the terrain. You will arrive at the border and be assisted with immigration before continuing into Nepal on your own jeeps.

On the last drive into Nepal, you will pass villages, river valleys and terraced farms before arriving in Kathmandu. You will stop for lunch along the route before continuing to your final destination.

After this tour, you will always have lifetime memories of the sacred monasteries, Buddhist culture, the Everest Base Camp, charming lakes, historical trading towns and also some stunning views of the Himalayas. Monsoon Season (July - August)

The summer season, July August, has relatively low rainfall compared with that in Nepal; therefore, it is usually too cloudy to see Mount Everest.

Steady travel, constant hydration, and adequate rest will help prevent altitude sickness. Overnight stops in Lhasa, Gyantse, Shigatse, and Rongbuk are planned to help reduce the risk of AMS.

Difficulty Level of Tibet Everest Base Camp Tour

While this trip involves less walking than trekking and will not fatigue participants physically, the altitude presents a considerable challenge. Lhasa at 3650 meters to Everest Base Camp at 5200 meters is an immense altitude gain.

At high altitudes, oxygen is half that found at sea level, contributing to AMS; headaches, insomnia, dizziness, and shortness of breath are very common. However, the tour has a few travel-related physical problems other than bumpy mountain roads that could cause car sickness and travel fatigue, and the overall hardship of extreme cold, intense UV radiation and extremely basic amenities at EBC.

Travel Insurance Requirements for the Tibet Everest Base Camp Tour

All tourists embarking on this tour are required to hold a travel insurance policy. It must cover high-altitude trekking and include provisions for any necessary medical treatment or evacuation in the event of an accident or altitude-related illness.

Why Travel Insurance Is Important

Facilities for medical care on the remote roads throughout this region are scarce, and in the event of an accident or illness that requires medical attention outside of a large center or airport, the need to travel to a larger city is quite likely.

What Your Insurance Policy Should Include

  • Ensure that your travel insurance covers:
  • High-altitude travel of at least 5,200 meters
  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Emergency evacuation and transport
  • Trip cancellation and trip disruption
  • Delayed flights and missed connections
  • Loss of luggage and personal belongings
  • Personal accident cover

Altitude and medical aspects

Despite the carefully planned itinerary allowing for gradual acclimatization, you might still be susceptible to altitude sickness. It is strongly recommended that you obtain high-altitude cover insurance for a trek which goes up to Rongbuk Monastery and Everest Base Camp.

Our Recommendation

Mountain Rock Treks would advise you to purchase travel insurance prior to your arrival in Tibet. While we organize all permits, transfers, accommodations and transfers, travel insurance is each individual's own responsibility and is a necessary aspect of a secure and well-prepared Everest Base Camp tour.

How Safe is This Lasha Tour with Tibet Everest Base Camp Tour?

The Lhasa to Everest Base Camp (Tibet side) trip is generally considered extremely safe for tour groups. It is highly recommended to arrange it via an agency to get official permits and have the accompaniment of a knowledgeable Tibetan guide. All the travel roads, from Lhasa (3,650m) to EBC (at approx. 5,150 5,200m), are well-developed. The entire trip is considered a standard tour procedure with approved hotel stays and checkpoints along the route.

The journeys are usually done in vans or buses with professional drivers. Travel is always along an authorized overland route from Lhasa to Shigatse, then Tingri, Rongbuk Monastery and Kerung on the return journey. No independent travel is permitted in Tibet. And due to official permits and supervision, your trip will also be safe.

The main challenge of this journey is the high altitude rather than road safety. As long as the traveler takes a reasonable amount of time to get used to the altitude of Lhasa (3,650m) and increases their elevation level gradually, altitude sickness poses minimal risk. Headache, dizziness and weariness are common, but serious altitude sickness is very rare when traveling with your guide.

So one could reasonably conclude, the Lhasa to EBC (Tibet side) trip is a rather safe, well-managed and comparatively easy trip for first-time high-altitude travelers when it is arranged under competent supervision, organized well with proper acclimatization. It is surely the most assured way to appreciate Mount Everest in close proximity.

  • Trekking experience is not required at all for this trip, as it is a fully overland vehicle expedition, allowing everybody from complete beginners to families and culture travelers to join. You will be doing only short walks at monasteries or viewpoints.

  • The biggest risk for any journey in the high plateau is Altitude Sickness (AMS) above 4,000m. Symptoms may include a mild headache or general feeling of fatigue, which is manageable with slow travel, ample hydration and sufficient time to acclimatize in Lhasa.

  • No, the China Group Visa fee is not included in the package; the cost of the Group Visa is approx USD 125 per person (more expensive for certain nationals), which we will arrange for you in Kathmandu as part of the process of your Nepal entry.

  • Yes, the north side of Mount Everest, as viewed from the Tibet side, is arguably the most stunning, open and clear view. Gawula Pass, Rongbuk Monastery and EBC all offer incredible views.

  • The temperature can drop between -10 and -25 degrees C, especially at night, and even during summer, it will still feel very cold due to the extreme altitude. So, do carry your winter clothes.

  • Yes, children and the elderly can travel, provided they are fit to undertake the trip and have a stable medical condition. As this tour is overland, it may be more convenient than any trek on the Everest expedition, and there is less effort required on your part physically, but acclimatization precautions are still essential.
