After September, Before November - Why October Is Nepal's Most Rewarding Autumn Month on Manaslu Circuit?
October is the most rewarding month to trek in autumn in Nepal on the Manaslu Circuit. October sits halfway through the autumn trekking season in Nepal. And that season consists of three months: September, October and November. September is full of rain and mud.
The days can be cloudy because of the last monsoon weather. But in November, it can be very cold during the high altitude nights. So that's the reason why October is the best month in autumn for trekking. It's also why October is always the first month to fill up for trekking in Nepal. In October, the trails are all dry. The skies are all blue. And there's every reason for trekkers to remember trekking this area during October for many more years to come.
The Sky Is at Its Clearest in October
October brings the clearest skies you can find during daylight hours. There's no other time of year when this would be possible in this area. And that's because by October, the monsoon weather has completely moved away from the whole area. Plus, from Lho village, you can view all of Manaslu North from one single location.
The Trail Is in Its Best Condition
The trails are now in the best condition they will be for your trek. The major connecting trails that we're taking from Soti Khola to Dharamsala are all dry & firm; there should be no risk at the river crossings; and the rocky, high sections of trail are all clear of any early-season snow. Thus, you can walk at a quicker pace, and when you reach camp, you will still have a lot of energy left.
Larkya La Pass Is Most Stable in October
If you want to safely cross the Larkya La Pass, many of the year's safest crossings will be between October 8 and October 24. During this time frame, you will experience sunny mornings, moderate winds, and stable snow conditions, resulting in a very safe crossing of this pass.
The Villages Are Fully Alive
All teahouses will be open, all menus will be fully stocked, and all villagers will be celebrating Dashain Festival with lots of flowers, drumming and festive celebrations; so for 30 days, the villages along the K to M trail will be alive with both the mountains and their people.
October Related Conditions on Manaslu Circuit Trek
The month of October is the best time of year to go on the Manaslu Circuit trek because the monsoon rains are no longer occurring and winter has not yet begun, so the weather is consistently in a nice middle temperature range, which will be ideal for trekking.
October Temperature on Manaslu Circuit
Temperatures during October along the Manaslu Circuit trail will vary according to elevation. Lower elevation valleys still have warm and comfortable temperatures, while as you travel higher elevations, temperatures become colder due to the change in elevation above sea level - especially at nighttime.
Elevation | Daytime Temp | Night Temp |
Below 2,000m | 18°C to 24°C | 10°C to 14°C |
2,000m to 3,500m | 12°C to 18°C | 4°C to 8°C |
3,500m to 4,500m | 6°C to 12°C | 0°C to 4°C |
Above 4,500m | 2°C to 7°C | -6°C to -2°C |
Larkya La Pass 5,106m | -2°C to 4°C | -10°C to -6°C |
Daytime vs Nighttime Temperature in October
Many trekkers don’t properly prepare for the temperature variation from day to night on Manaslu. It is substantial.
During the day, you will feel warm while trekking. Above 3,000m, you may find yourself unzipping your jacket by mid-morning. Once the sun disappears behind the mountain by 4:00pm, you will start to notice the dramatic temperature drop. As an example, the temperature can drop by 10 degrees within one hour after the sun recedes behind the mountain.
By the time you sit down for dinner in the teahouse (roughly 6:00pm), you will want to put all of your down jacket on. This is a daily occurrence at this time of year, so always carry your warm layer in your day pack, not in the bottom of your large pack.
October Rainfall on Manaslu Circuit
October is one of the driest months on the entire Manaslu circuit because the monsoon ends in late September, and there will be little to no significant rain until spring again.
Time of October | Chance of Rain | What It Looks Like |
October 1 to 10 | Low | Occasional light drizzle, clears fast |
October 11 to 20 | Very low | Rare, usually only at night |
October 21 to 31 | Very low | Almost none below 4,000m |
Usually, the rain that falls early in October will be very light and for a short period of time. So it would be unusual for this to cause any major interruption to a complete day of trekking. And between the early and middle parts of October, there's little chance of a rainy day.
October Snowfall and When It Starts
There'll be little or no snow present on the lower and middle portions of the trail during the month of October. But above 4,500 metres, conditions will be dramatically different from those at lower elevations. And that's especially true during the latter half of the month.
Location | Snow Risk in Early Oct | Snow Risk in Late Oct |
Below 3,500m | None | None |
3,500m to 4,500m | Very unlikely | Possible but rare |
Above 4,500m | Unlikely | Possible |
Larkya La Pass | Light dusting possible | Fresh snow possible |
It's not uncommon for there to be fresh snow at the pass at the end of October. Typically, this snow is light and melts in less than 24 hours. But it can also happen that there'll be enough serious snowfall to completely close off the pass. This doesn't happen all that often in October. But it does happen. So when you create your trek itinerary near Dharamsala, be sure to include at least one buffer day in between your first and last trek.
Wind Conditions in October on the Trail
On the Manaslu Trekking Circuit, wind in October is more of a factor than most guides mention. You'll hardly notice any wind on the lower sections of the trail because they're all sheltered. But as soon as you get above 4,000m, you're going to need to make wind part of your planning.
The golden rule that most experienced guides use: if you start your high altitude days before 7am, you'll have very calm conditions at high altitude on the Manaslu Circuit in October. And by 12pm, the winds will start to pick up significantly. So that's especially true near the exposed ridges and the pass.
Time of Day | Wind Level Above 4,000m |
4am to 9am | Calm to light |
9am to 12pm | Light to moderate |
12pm to 3pm | Moderate to strong |
3pm onwards | Strong, sometimes very strong |
When you're crossing Larkya La Pass, take note of what time your group departs from base camp. A group that leaves at 2 or 3am will experience calm winds throughout the ascent. But a group leaving at 6am or later will frequently experience strong headwinds during the open ridge section.
Humidity and Air Quality in October
October is the month with the best air quality on the Manaslu Circuit. After monsoon the dust and haze that were present before the monsoon are completely removed from the atmosphere. The air feels fresh and crisp. And visibility on clear October days extends over 100 kilometres. Many of the mountain ranges that can't be seen during the pre-monsoon season will now become visible.
As the humidity drops dramatically in October compared to the months of the monsoon, the air generally feels drier. And it's much easier to breathe when below 4,000 metres altitude. But after crossing 4,000 metres, the dry air can dehydrate your throat and lips quickly. So make sure to drink more water than you'd normally drink on other types of treks. And use a lip balm to keep your lips hydrated from the moment you start your ascent.
Weather at Low Elevation in October
The weather in the lower parts of the Manaslu Circuit from Soti Khola to around Jagat at 1,410m in October is warm and tropical in nature. The temperature ranges between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius during the day. And the scenery is lush and green due to the recent monsoon rains. The rivers are also full and clear due to the heavy rainfall from the monsoon.
The scenery along the trail during October is very beautiful. And it offers an experience unlike that experienced at higher elevations. So enjoy this warm weather here. You'll appreciate the cool temperatures at higher elevations even more once you start to climb.
Weather at High Elevation in October
Things completely change at and above 3500m during October. The trees are gone, the land is opened into large rocky valleys and high ridges, the sky looks larger, and the air is very thin.
Daytime temperatures above 3500m in October range from 6 °C to 12°C, which are quite comfortable if walking and producing body heat, but as soon as you stop to rest or get into your tent, it will feel cold immediately.
Three of the highest teahouses that we stay at (Samagaon, Samdo and Dharamsala) regularly see nighttime temperatures in October drop below 0° C (freezing). The dining rooms of the teahouses have a wood stove or yak dung burner for heat, but the bedrooms do not. Therefore, if you are sleeping at 3500m +, a good sleeping bag is essential.
How Difficult Is the Manaslu Circuit Trek in October?
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is challenging. But it's not as difficult as many other treks in Nepal. It does pose unique challenges. So with proper preparation and being in good shape, a healthy individual should be able to complete the trek.
The most difficult part of this trek is not the distance. It's the altitude at which you're walking. The highest point on this trek is Larkya La Pass at 5,106m. And that's about 300m lower than Everest Base Camp. But reaching the Manaslu pass takes a shorter period of time. So that leaves your body less time to acclimatize than if climbing to EBC by way of ABC itself.
The following factors contribute to the overall difficulty of the Manaslu Circuit Trek, especially in October:
Fitness Level
Newcomers to hiking shouldn't attempt this trail. You'll hike for up to 14 days at a pace of six to eight hours daily. So your legs, knees and lungs should be prepared before arriving in Kathmandu.
Altitude
The hardest part about the trip is at Larkya La Pass at 5,106m. So it's important to acclimatize properly. There are two scheduled rest days at Samagaon and Samdo before crossing the pass. And if you don't take them, you won't be able to cross the pass due to how much you'll have to struggle.
Navigation
The trek will always have clear markings to identify the established trail. So you won't get lost. But the long distance between the two villages means carrying a licensed guide is a requirement for all aspects of your trip. And as well as providing operational direction, they'll also help in critical thinking decisions on the mountain.
Remote Area
Adverse conditions exist between Samagaon and Dharamsala. There isn't a road or shortcut back if you find yourself in a situation where you need to leave the trail. So when you enter that section of the trek, your only option is to continue on until you're out of that section.
October Cold
Temperatures at night during October can reach below zero degrees at altitudes above 3,800m. Daytime temperatures tend to be warm. But nothing can replace a good sleeping bag rated at minus 10 degrees, a down jacket and multiple warm layers needed to survive the night. And these items aren't considered luxury items during this trek. They're required to survive the night.
Crossing Rivers
The best month for crossing rivers along the trail is actually October. And that's because the monsoons have finished and the rivers are lower. Many crossings that are potentially very dangerous in September will be extremely easy and safe in October.
Distance Walked Daily
Walking daily, you'll cover approximately 12 to 16km. This distance sounds reasonable, and it is. But due to altitude, cold and roughness of the trail, 1km will feel further than it does back home.
October 10 to October 22: The Best Days to Cross Larkya La Pass on Manaslu Circuit Trek
Period | Conditions at Larkya La |
October 1 to 9 | Good but last monsoon moisture still possible |
October 10 to 22 | Stable, clear, calm, best of the year |
October 23 to 31 | Colder, wind increases, snow more likely |
At an elevation of 5,106m, Larkya La Pass is the highest point of the entire Manaslu Circuit. And it's the one day of the trek that defines whether it'll be a triumphant or grueling experience. The timing of your crossing is more significant than many trekkers realize.
October 10 to 22 represents a perfect window. The monsoon has completely departed. And frigid temperatures will not have arrived yet. So the pass will be dry, clear and crossable with the greatest degree of certainty for any date on the trekking season.
Depart Dharamsala at two o'clock in the morning. Don't depart at four in the morning or even at sunrise. At two o'clock in the morning, the pass will be uniquely calm and safe. And by sunrise, you'll be within striking distance of reaching its summit. But if you depart too late, you'll experience intense winds. And clouds will billow over the exposed ridge of the pass, drastically reducing your visibility.
Departing at two o'clock in the morning seems like an overwhelming challenge the previous evening. But when on the pass, it'll be the smartest decision you've ever made.
The path to the mountain pass is solid and has no new snow. On a perfect day, you can see 100km from the mountain pass down below. And at the top of this mountain pass, you can view all four of the Manaslu, Himlung, Cheo Himal, and Annapurna ranges at once. Trekkers that pass through during this time frame constantly state it's the single most mesmerizing experience while visiting Nepal.
But if you don't cross during October 10 to 22, it doesn't mean you can't pass. It means you're now at a greater risk of failure. After October 22, the chance of accumulating snow at the mountain pass becomes much greater. And the wind will usually increase. So your window of opportunity will get smaller. And your guide may be forced to keep you at Dharamsala for another 24 hours until conditions improve to allow for safe crossing.
So this is why we schedule all our departures in October for Manaslu. It ensures our clients reach the mountain pass between October 10 and the 22nd. It's not a coincidence. And it's the result of proper planning since we started preparing.

What Package Costs in October 2026
By booking a trek with us, we'll relieve you of every logistical headache associated with your trek. That includes permits, guide, porter and accommodation arrangements. We'll take care of everything. So you won't have to worry about anything during your stay in Nepal. Below is what our package prices look like for October 2026.
Solo Trekkers: There are only 6 spots left at the price of USD 1,195 per person. And once these spots are sold, the price is going to increase.
Groups of 2 to 6: This option requires a minimum of two people. It's our most popular option for friends and couples who are trekking together. The price is USD 990 per person.
Groups of 7 to 10: This is the best value option for those looking to trek with a group, for example trekking clubs or other social groups. The price for this option is USD 950 per person.
Because Dashain is an important holiday for the Nepalis, many porters will return home to celebrate with their families. And that's understandable because Dashain is the most significant holiday in Nepal. It's similar to Christmas, New Year's or Easter in Western cultures. But the porters who do remain in Kathmandu will be extremely busy during the holiday. And they'll have limited availability during the week. Especially during the 10th through 18th of October.
Your guides and porters have worked hard to earn an additional reward for their efforts during Dashain. So it's customary for trekkers who respect the culture to leave a cash tip of approximately $30 to $50 for your team.
In the event of an emergency helicopter evacuation from the Manaslu Valley, the cost can range anywhere from $3,000 to $8,000 USD. And that depends on where you are located along the trail. Your general travel insurance may not provide coverage for any potential expenses if you need emergency medical services.
So you'll need to obtain specific trekking insurance which provides helicopter rescue and high altitude evacuation coverage prior to leaving home. And it'll be the most expensive single financial decision you'll make regarding your trek.

What is The Cost of RAP, MCAP, ACAP Permits In October For Manaslu Circuit Trek
October is the peak time of year for autumn trekking in Nepal. So it'll also be the most expensive time for the RAP when compared with other months. Here's where you can find the current price of permits per person, as well as the approximate cost for your entire trek.
Restricted Area Permit (RAP) Cost in October
From September to November, the RAP will cost USD 100 per person for the first 7 days. And it'll cost USD 15 per person for each day beyond 7 days. October falls in the peak period. So you'll be required to pay the higher fee.
For a 14-day trek with an estimated 10 days in the restricted zone between Jagat and Dharapani, the RAP will work out at USD 145 to USD 170 per person.
MCAP Permit Cost in October
The MCAP permit costs approximately USD 25 to 30 per person. And it's the same price all year long with no seasonal variation.
ACAP Permit
The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit costs USD 30 per person. And this fee won't change no matter the season. The charge remains the same all year round.
Chumnubri Municipality Permit
The cost of the permit is fixed at approximately NPR 2,000 or about USD 15. And this fee does contribute directly to maintaining a reasonable standard of trails and bridges throughout the region.
Getting Permits in October During Nepal Biggest Festival Timeline
Obtaining your Manaslu permit this October is different from obtaining it in March or April. During the Dashain celebration, offices in Kathmandu will operate with reduced hours. Or they'll shut down completely for up to five days. Trekkers without a permit who attempt to resolve these issues themselves frequently spend two to three days waiting for offices to reopen before returning to complete their trip. So by booking your Manaslu Circuit Trek through a travel agency, they'll complete the entire permit application process for you before you arrive in Kathmandu.
For several years, we've successfully managed October permits through every festival. So we know precisely which offices will be closed, for how long and how to work around them. And the three-day delay that frequently plagues solo trekkers booking permits in October won't occur for our trekkers.
If you're obtaining your own permit, apply at least four weeks prior to your trek in October. And don't expect to receive it upon arrival. Also consult Nepal's public holiday calendar for your respective Dashain and Tihar dates. And plan on arriving in Kathmandu at least two days prior to your permit issuance date.

October-Specific Itinerary Tips
You should arrive in Kathmandu by October 1 or sooner. That's especially important if your Dashain falls in the first two weeks of that month. So you'll have time to check your equipment before beginning the trek, obtain necessary permits and rest well before traveling to the trailhead.
And add an additional buffer day, for a total of 3, to your trek for late October conditions. That's particularly important on the Larkya La Pass because a heavy winter storm can shut down this pass for an entire day. Extra time in Dharamsala gives you some safety in case the weather isn't appropriate for crossing. So you'll be glad you have it when it clears after the snow melts.
The most important day to take off is at Samagaon, the village before Larkya La. Almost all trekkers pushing through without resting either before or after Samagaon have had greater difficulty crossing the pass. So use your acclimatisation day to walk up to the Pungyen Monastery above Samagaon. It's an amazing 2-hour hike. And it'll help with the adjustment to high-altitude trekking.
Final say
October offers some of the best experiences Nepal has to offer when traversing the Manaslu Circuit. You'll find crystal clear blue skies and fabulous mountainous terrain.
