Observed in Lo Manthang as per the Tibetan calendar, the Tiji custom 2025 will be held on May 24, 25, and 26.

With the Mustang Tiji Festival Jeep Tour fixed departure, wanderers can join local and traditional rites known as Tiji that offer an unrivaled, mesmerizing, colorful cultural attraction. In just a single jeep ride adventure, you reach two main attractions in Upper Mustang and Lo-Manthang with a four-wheel drive jeep.

Tiji is not an ordinary rite in the region above. It is rooted in a fascinating story that gives it importance. This lively three-day religious event celebrates Tibetan traditions and centers around a legend of a son who saves the Mustang kingdom from destruction. Unique to Lo-Manthang in Upper Mustang, Tiji or "Tempa Chirim," which means 'Prayer for World Peace' celebrates the incarnation of Lord Buddha as Dorjee Sonnu, who defeats the demon Man Tam Ru. This evil creature who feeds on humans and causes hell with rain, storms, and drought is defeated in the story of this rite. Tiji is not only about celebrations; it's a cultural mosaic with history and spirituality.

"Tiji" is derived from the phrase "ten che," which means peace and triumph of goodness over evil in Buddhism, i.e., "hope of Buddhism prevailing in the world for peace." To get rid of the wicked spirits and devils, locals during the three-day feast will perform traditional dances, and this myth was inspired by a story about heroic deeds performed by Dorje Jano when he defeated his evil father in a fight over symbolizing restoration of water reservoir supplying only such regions as Mustang that had been ravished by severe drought. It will take 52 dances to banish the demon. This means you can observe 52 dances on colorful clothes and unique masks for three days.

With a 12-day Upper Mustang Jeep Exploration with a fixed departure, you can go on an Off-Road Exploration to view extraordinary regions and attend the Tiji Festivity on the exact date, i.e., May 6, 7, and 8, without walking for hours. It's a luxury overland drive to the upper Mustang, a famous and secluded part of Nepal.

52 Dances Are Performed for 3 Days on Tiji Festival

Tiji, a Tibetan-Buddhist event, is an ancient ritual that dates back to Guru Rinpoche. The whole celebration is centered on two critical characters: Dorje Jono, the savior, and his father, who is a demon. Dorje Jono performs 52 magical dances in three days, and the masks and costumes are usually different for each performance. The main character dances to the music made from traditional instruments.

May 24th, 1st Day of the Tiji Festival

The opening day of the Tiji Festivity is when 'Tsa Chaam' begins. This sacred dance tells the story of Dorji Sonam, a reincarnation of Buddha who was born to fight off an evil demon that plagued Mustang's kingdom. The monks represent the pain caused to people by a demon named Man Tam Ru through symbolic movements and show the chaos brought upon the land.

May 25th, 2nd Day of the Tiji Festival

The energy of the Festivity increases on day two when monks perform the NgaCham dance. In this riveting performance, Dorjee Sonam tries to re-establish balance by sending the demon back into the Buddha realm. The monks show a fight between good and evil through complex choreography, creating an account of spiritual victory over evil.

May 26th, 3rd Day of the Tiji Festival

The third and last day of the Tiji Festivity ends with a spectacular Rha Chham dance. The climax of this ritual is the victory of Dorjee Sonam, who is sent away from Mustang, an evil demon. Killing the demon represented by a barley effigy means this land will be peaceful and prosperous. As the monks go on with each rhythmic movement, they bring hope and harmony into our lives to show that unity is an everlasting message of spiritual resilience.

What Preparations Should Be Made For The Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Jeep Tour?

This Exploration takes you to the restricted area of the upper Mustang region on the fixed departure dates. Here are some of the preparations for upper mustang travel you must make to make your journey successful.

Planning Your Schedule

Before anything else, mark your calendar for the fixed departure date: 19th May. This is the only departure date for the Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Jeep Tour for the year 2025. The trip starts from Kathmandu, and you need to be prepared for this date so as not to miss the Tiji Festivity on May 24, 25, and 26. Reschedule your calendar to fit in this fixed departure date. If you miss this departure date, you must wait a year to attend the Tiji Fiesta.

Acquire the Required Permits

Securing the permits is one of the significant issues that must be addressed before going on a Tiji Festival Upper Mustang Jeep Tour. The Upper Mustang region is restricted, and travelers need special permits. The issuance of these permits is usually done through trekking agencies and tour operators that have been certified by the government. The permit application process should start early since processing and approval of permits may take several weeks to a few months.

Pack Appropriately

Mustang's weather is very unpredictable, so people should pack their clothes for all types of weather. Wear warm and waterproof clothing or boots and a hat or head cover to prevent such conditions. Don't forget to take prescribed medicines and enough cash for emergencies and other personal needs.

Be Respectful

On a trip to such a far and culturally endowed place, the visitor should tread that path with reverence. Pay attention to the local traditions, customs, and lifestyles; be wary of your behavior to avoid offending.

Understand the Risks

Acknowledge the peculiarities of a long journey to a remote place, such as Mustang. Consider road conditions, erratic weather patterns, and the absence of health centers. Choose comprehensive travel insurance and notify relatives of the destination.

Prepare for Altitude

Acclimatize slowly as the Mustang is at a high altitude. Drink adequate water, and watch for signs of altitude sickness – discomfort or headache are examples.

Altitude Sickness Chances On Mustang Tiji Festival Jeep Tour

Following our Mustang Tiji Festival Jeep Tour fixed departure Itinerary, you reach the highest point of the trip at Lo Manthang, which is only 3,900m. Since the elevation is not so great, the chances of getting altitude sickness are generally low.

It is comforting to know that your Excursion lasts most of its duration below the 4,00-metre mark, where altitude sickness is not as prevalent. Nevertheless, it should be noted that altitude sickness can also differ from person to person, and some may get affected even at lower elevations.

No travelers know where they may or may not be affected by altitude sickness; therefore, being prepared beforehand is everything. This being said medications such as Diamox are also efficient in preventing and treating symptoms of altitude festival sickness. Furthermore, keeping one hydrated and avoiding alcoholic beverages at gradually increasing altitudes can help minimize the possibility of encountering problems due to high altitudes.

Having guides or team leaders who are well-conversed with the environment is priceless. They can advise on the right acclimatization practices and identify altitude sickness early. However, in case of symptoms, their only solution is to descend to a lower altitude.
