Kailash Saga Dawa Festival tour is a 10 day adventure that lets you witness one of the biggest Tibetan festivals in western Tibet, Kailash on 11th June 2025. This festival is a prism of cultural wealth with its sacred rituals and colorful fairs. It is a lifetime opportunity for visitors to see and actually live the culture and lives of the local authentic Tibetan people.

Attend our Fixed Departure Group Join-in Tours annually at the Saga Dawa Festival in western Tibet in Kailash. This festival allows travelers to reach the Holy Kailash mountain and enjoy the Tibetan culture and festivals. Check the fixed departure dates for the Kailash Saga Dawa Festival in 2025 and join our group tours from Kathmandu or Lhasa.

Many Tibetans come to Tarboche, Kailash, to attend the Saga Dawa ceremony every year's full moon. It is one of the most important festivals for Tibetans. The Saga Dawa celebration usually occurs on the full moon in the last month of the fourth Tibetan lunar calendar. The major thing that makes this festival live is changing the Tarboche Flagpole, the high pole on the way for trekking around Kailash. The flagpole is pulled down and down, and a new flagpole is raised. The festival celebration is attended by locals, foreign pilgrims, and tourists. Tibetan people from different parts of Tibet come to this sacred site, participate in the Saga Dawa Festival, and bind their small prayer flags to the pole. As Buddhism says, the Saga Dawa Festival is held with a view to that day when Sakyamuni Buddha was enlightened.

The major celebration day on 11th June will be held at Tarbuche. During this day, you can witness and participate in traditional Tibetan rituals, such as praying, chanting, and dancing.

We will start our adventure by flying from Nepal to Kathmandu and taking an Overland tour through the Kerong border up to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar. The tour will be ten days long and proceed through Tibetan villages. Mount Kailash is a sacred place for pilgrims to visit on a spiritual journey to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake.

Travelers will also take on the Kailash Kora, which is the spiritual walk around Mount Kailash. It is one of the hardest trekking parts of the tour. Furthermore, you are given various options, such as a private helper or pony to take care of it.

Then, the last part of the trip, which will be the exploration of the Kailash Saga Dawa Festival tour and the drive back to Kathmandu through the Kyirung/Kerong Border, will be the final leg of the trip. Another alternative route to reach Mt Kailash to attend the festival is also available. In this alternative route, you will first arrive at Lhasa and explore some of its attractions, like Potala Palace and the main tourist places of Lhasa, to enjoy sightseeing. On our second day, we move around Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar by travelling across many historical Tibetan cities and elevated high passes from where the stunning views of the Tibetan and Nepalese will be visible.

Every year, many Tibetans from different regions of Tibet come to pray and pitch a flagpole with many accumulated prayer flags. The residents try as hard as possible to make the feast delightful. The monk from the neighboring monastery performs the ceremony. The local folks of this region worship and circumambulate the mountain for all their good life and death in the next birth. The main function is held at Tarbuche (Serchung, Kailash region) on the first day of the Kailash Kora.

We at Mountain Rock Treks provide a complete travel plan that includes a Mount Kailash Saga Dawa festival tour with a Tibet visa arrangement, a Tibet travel permit, a guide, transportation, accommodation, and staffing. At Mountain Rock Treks, a fixed departure for the 2025 Saga Dawa Festival Tour is guaranteed. According to the Tibetan lunar calendar, the celebration will be held on June 11th, 2025. Go through the Saga Dawa Festival Tour itinerary and contact us at a magnificent cultural excursion to the Saga Dawa Festival at Mount Kailash.

When and Where will the Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour take Place?

This festival is held yearly in the fourth month of the Lunar Tibetan calendar, on the full moon day (May / June). In 2025, the celebration will take place on June 11th .

Tibetans in Lhasa celebrate the Saga Dawa festival until the afternoon at the foot of the Potala Palace. On the other hand, the Tibetans now celebrate this as an annual ritual. On this day, every year, the people will dress, sing, dance, have a picnic, or unite in Linkor. The Saga Dawa Festival on Mt. Kailash, Tibet's most sacred mountain, is also celebrated in addition to Lhasa. Hundreds and thousands of people would flock to the holy mountain during the Saga Dawa Festival in Tibet. Here are some of the places that the festivals takes place:

  • Jokhang Temple: Kora, monk chanting, and rituals
  • Potala Palace: Tibetans from all places come to perform rituals, such as kora and chanting.
  • Lhasa Lake: Rituals, Fish Freedom and the Others.
  • Mount Kailash: The flag-raising ritual was accompanied by a 3-day kora.
  • Lake Manasarovar: holy dip, walk for worship, and more.

What to Expect During the Saga Dawa Festival?

Saga Dawa is a special time in Tibet, and you will most likely see many Tibetan pilgrims taking clockwise circumambulations around Jokhang Temple, Potala Palace, Barkhor Street, and Ling Khor Street.

Lots of animals and fish are released into the Lhasa River. Many members are at the Drepung kitchen, wishing to donate goodies to the monks when they pray inside the building. You can expect to see Tibetan people eating only vegetables, especially during the day. Of course, you will not miss many people giving money. On the other hand, when you walk around, you will see many picnic groups while the elderly Tibetans are chanting their mantras.

The Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour Celebration

11th June 2025, Day of the Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Celebration:

People will do a ceremonial offering of butter lamps in the temple. The butter lamps are just processed by yak butter or oil in a vessel with a flame. The lamps cast a smoky light. Tibetan Buddhist faith emphasizes meditation and mind concentration, demonstrated by the lights. Drums and cymbals, usually used in Tibetan rituals as accompaniments drew spirits or drove away evil. A local lama, a spiritual leader, will be there to offer a blessing for the coming year. Loyal followers present offerings to the monastery, which will accept everything, no matter how big or small.

Saga Dawa is the ceremony with the lama’s (guru’s) prayers. The local lama, the spiritual leader, organizes the Saga Dawa festival through hundreds of prayers. In front of it, hundreds of people are seated or standing to pray. People also visit Dzongyab Lukhang Park, located near the Potala Palace. They arrange a large outdoor picnic at the spot. The burning of butter lamps at the temples will still be there.

The most significant part of this celebration will consist of the “Tarboche flagpole” being taken down and a new one erected instead. The Prayer Flagpole is a tall pole with hundreds or Junebe thousands of flags from various colors on it. Everybody in the place, whether residents or guests, attends the pole replacement ceremony of this group with the same degree of admiration and laughter. Each prayer flag is like a wish to be fulfilled. The flags can wave to boost the probability of someone answering. The story says that if Tibet is not in the right position, it will face some problems. Thus, it is essential to ensure the best possible pole erection. Only the most trustworthy pole-sitter is allowed to perform the job. If done correctly, it makes people feel comfortable and satisfied.

3 Day Kora Kailash Kora Starting on 11th June:

On the same day, travelers will participate in the event by joining the Kailash Kora, where you will trek to Dirapuk. Kora is a ritualistic circumambulation of a sacred place that accumulates merit. Kailash Kora is a complete circumambulation around the holy Mountain. We have scheduled the 2025 Kailash festival tour to complete this Kora during the Saga Dawa Festival. It is an excellent mix of severe activities and fun times. The Kora is mainly done around Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash during the holy times. The lake is sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Bon religion. Pilgrims start this Kora on the auspicious day of the Saga Dawa Festival clockwise around the lake and the Mountain for spiritual blessings. Generally, this koras lasts about 3 days.

Many pilgrims start the circumambulation of Mount Kailash on foot for 3 days after receiving the monks' blessings or while participating in a puja. Similarly, some pilgrims travel the entire way on the Kora, which lasts about 2 weeks. All this is done to bring good fortune and make amends for lifetime sins.

Essential Info

Best Time for Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour

The best time to participate in the Saga Dawa Tour is when the festival begins, which is mostly in May or June. The 2025 Saga Dawa Celebrations will be scheduled for the 11th  of June. The Kailash region in May and June is most pleasantly warm. During the day, the temperatures tend to be moderate; they are below freezing at night and around 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) during the day.

Additionally, it is less likely to encounter heavy rain or snow. Rather, that might happen in the earlier or later months. Despite that, nights are still cold, going down to 1°C (34°F) and even colder than that.

The unending blue skies in June will afford you majestic sights from all sides of Kailash Mountain. If you reserve your trip at least a week before June 11, you will not be short of time to rejoice in each part of the Saga Dawa Festival.

This gives you some time to get used to the altitude, participate in pre-festival rituals, and finally enjoy the full swing of the cultural festivity. The best-case scenario is that you start your trip on June 6, 2025. Thus, you have a one-week period of adaptation and a chance to stroll down the streets around the festival location.

Accommodation Facility on Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour

We understand that a cozy hostel is most important, and this is especially relevant for an adventurous trip to The Kailash Saga Dawa Festival. This is why you benefited from the accommodation provision in the package instead of worrying about it while on holiday. Most of the remote area accommodation you will stay in will likely be a guesthouse. These hostels function as pilgrims' resting places where they June get necessary things that are enough for them to cover their basic needs, like a bed and a blanket for a quiet rest.

Occasionally, guest houses do not have en-suite bathrooms but shared ones in other buildings. It is important to note that the availability of hot water is limited to making your drinks only. Electricity as well be cut off; this is your chance to let go and enjoy the nature around you.

When you come to Darchen, at the entry gate to Mount Kailash, you will find that hotels seem more accommodating than the guesthouses you stayed in during your trek. Although not a five-star comfort, they play a role of relaxation after a tiring day of visiting new places.

Guesthouses are where you can feel the authentic love of the Tibetans. The family-owned restaurants are an expression of local traditions. So, you will have accommodations with basic facilities such as good beds, shared bathrooms, and access to water (potentially limited to particular times). For some, guesthouses in bigger towns could have amenities like internet access, but this is not always true.

Foods Facility on Kailash Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour

The meal plan included with your Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour includes breakfast only. This allows you to discover Tibet’s varied and thrilling cuisine while accommodating any dietary requirements you may have.

Tibetan, Sichuan, Xinjiang, and Hunan flavors are prominent in Tibetan cuisine. Get ready to enjoy deliciously rich Tibetan stews with tongue-tingling dishes from Sichuan and Hunan and the sumptuous foods of Xinjiang.

As the capital of Tibet, Lhasa has the most kinds of food. You can taste the most authentic Tibetan food here. And in more remote areas, there are fewer choices for you. Generally speaking, you will have instant noodles/ fried rice/ pancakes/ omelets, etc., when you go around Mt Kailash trekking.

The drink is usually  Butter Tea or Sweet Tea Beverage, which you can get in nearly every house/restaurant/ tent hotel in remote areas where it is available to sell tea.

You will have the following meal choices at places like Kerung, Saga, Manasarovar, Darchen, and Zuthulpuk and on your way between these destinations.

Breakfast options typically include tea, coffee, milk, biscuits, and sometimes Dalmot (a lentil stew). Lunch and dinner features a variety of dishes like Pulao (a spiced rice dish), Chana Masala (chickpea curry), vegetable curries, Roti (flatbread), pickles, and sometimes even desserts like Gulab Jamun (a sweet dumpling). On the Kailash Parikrama (circumambulation), expect packed lunches with samosas, sandwiches, fruits, and chocolates.

What Preparations To Make For Your Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour 2025?

The Kailash Saga Dawa Festival is unique; you enjoy spirituality while reaching Mt. Kailash. To ensure you have a hassle-free journey, here are a few preparations to make before your 2025 tour.

  • The festival happens during peak tourist season, so be prepared for that and schedule it in advance so that you can find some group who could manage the festival and specialize in the Kailash pilgrimage like Mountain Rock Treks would do.
  • We will assist you in getting the necessary documents like a Tibet Travel Permit and a Chinese Visa. We will look into the difficulties faced during the documentation process as soon as possible. Please check your passport validity for the duration of the tour. Ensure this is done before the trip, along with other required paperwork.
  • Kailash kora (circumambulation) is a challenging trek, especially Dolma-la pass, which is at 5,600 m elevation from sea level. You need to prepare & follow a workout regime all year long, keeping cardio-vascular endurance and leg strength in mind. The earlier you start, the more comfortable you will be during the trek.
  • Invest in good trekking poles for better balance and support on uneven terrain. Also, don’t forget to pack your sunglasses, sunscreen, and headlamp for early morning starts.
  • Saga Dawa Festival is a religious time for Tibetan Buddhists, so please respect their customs and traditions. Dress modestly, avoid making loud noises near monasteries, and always be polite to your fellow pilgrims.
  • Bring cash in Chinese Yuan for small purchases and tips.
  • Inform yourself about Tibetan customs concerning photography – especially at religious sites.
  • Download a Tibetan phrasebook or translation app so you can cover basic communication.

Travel Insurance Requirements for Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour

Getting travel insurance and health insurance is an intelligent thing to do. Nevertheless, travel to Kailash Mansarovar in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) is advisable and life-required. Here's why:

The Kailash area is located at a high altitude, creating unique health problems. Altitude sickness and other medical issues can take you by surprise. Travel insurance protects yourself against unforeseen accidents since the bill for medical care, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation can be very high without insurance.

The Kailash Mansarovar tours involve the risk of unpredictability. Remote places, adverse weather, and the possibility of route changes in May or June occur.

The right insurance will cover financial risks associated with these uncertainties so that you can concentrate on the spiritual and cultural essence of your journey.

Not every travel insurance policy covers travel to the TAR region. Your best choice is to inquire with your insurance agent about travel and health-related emergencies in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Be certain that the validity period of the insurance plan you select covers the total length of your Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour.

Altitude Sickness Considerations on Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour

The Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour takes the participants high up in the altitudes through the Kailash Kora, which is an average of 5,600 meters (18,400 ft). This rise can cause altitude sickness, so being well-prepared is very important. The highest point you will attain is Drolma La Pass, 5,630 meters above. Completing the 56 km clockwise Kailash trekking usually takes three days.

It is recommended that you start your tour in Lhasa or Kathmandu to adapt accordingly. This can help you not encounter unexpected altitude changes, thus easing the body to accommodate. We ensure that the experienced guides adjust their itineraries so that there is a more gradual introduction to higher altitudes every day to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

This convenient approach makes it possible to appreciate Tibetan culture and nature while your body has time to get acclimatized. When you come to Mount Kailash, you are prepared enough for the joy of the spiritual journey.

Transportation Facility

You will be provided with comfortable private transportation during your whole trip. The choice of vehicle type will be based on the group size:

  • Smaller group: We have the cozy van for a more personal service.
  • Larger group: if you have many friends, no problem. We’ll get the spacious mini-coach.

This private transportation will take you from Kathmandu, Nepal, to all key places of Tibet and back to Kathmandu after your tour.

How to Stay Well on Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour: Health and Safety Measures

Health and safety are the doors that will make your trip or break it. You can still climb up if you have any health conditions. Here are a few tips on how you can keep your health and safety during the tour:
