The Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek is a 13-day trek that leads to the base camp for the third-highest mountain on earth, Kanchenjunga at 8,586m, in the isolated eastern corner of Nepal. And it offers an alternative to the very well-known trekking routes of Everest and Annapurna.

This trek will take you through untouched wilderness in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, which is home to snow leopards, red pandas and some of the oldest villages belonging to the Limbu and Rai communities.

All of our senior trekking guides at Mountain Rock Treks have had the opportunity to trek the entire length of this route. From the beautiful tea plantations in Fikkal to the raw glacial moraines found under Yalung Base Camp, we've trekked every metre along the provided itinerary. So this isn't just a route we sell as trekkers. It's a true and complete knowledge of the route.

Additional Introduction to

Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek offers you the opportunity to explore the south face of Kanchenjunga, which is the third-highest mountain in the world and towers 8,586 meters in height. This 13-day trekking adventure takes you on an adventurous walk through the Simbua Khola river valley, crossing different climatic zones all the way to Oktang at an altitude of 4,730m, also known as the South Base Camp.

From Taplejung village, you can begin your walk and continue through Limboo villages of Lalikharka and Khokling to follow the Simbua Khola river through the forest stopover of Tortong. Crossing the high pass of Lasiya Bhanjyang, the terrain spreads out wide and gives way to the Yalung Valley.

From this point, you come face-to-face with Talung peak at 7,349 meters, Rathong peak at 6,678 meters, and Kabru peaks, which form the tallest and southernmost mountains that measure over 7,000 meters high in the world.

The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area houses snow leopards, Asian black bears, red pandas, and the Himalayan Tahr. Bird watchers might see the blood pheasant, snow cock, and golden-breasted fulvetta within the dense forests of the trail's lowlands. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area has been recognized by the WWF under its Sacred Himalayan Landscape program.

The Kanchenjunga region attracts far fewer tourists compared to Everest and Annapurna. You will get to walk through the quaint villages inhabited by Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa communities. This trail involves crossing rivers, seeing Mani walls, stone chortens, and prayer flag lines that have existed for ages due to Tibetan Buddhist influence.

Moderate physical fitness and a certain amount of experience with trekking are required. The daily hiking hours average between five and seven hours, and there are stretches of the trail that require fitness, as well as being quite isolated. Our expertly trained team at Mountain Rock Treks has vast experience with the Kanchenjunga trek and will organize everything while you focus on the trek itself.

Why Most Trekkers Haven't Heard of This Trek?

Compared to Everest Base Camp's over 50,000 yearly trekkers, only 2,000 hikers annually hike to Kanchenjunga. The remote area requires obtaining a permit to hike through it, thus keeping other people away from using the hiking route and leaving you in the complete isolation of the beautiful, wild Himalayan wilderness.

This is the best-kept secret in Nepal for hikers who appreciate solitude, culture, untouched beauty, and don't want to compete for space to take pictures for their Instagram accounts; so if you want to experience something that most people don't get to experience, Kanchenjunga is the perfect trek for you.

A Trek to the Base of the World's Third-Highest Mountain in 2026/27

In the Himalayas, Kanchenjunga is the world’s highest mountain. It is located along the border of Nepal and Sikkim, India. Its south base camp is called Yalung Base Camp and is located at a height of 4580 m. It offers dramatic views of the mountain from close up due to its height. At Everest Base Camp, you only see part of a glacier and not the summit, which is behind the Lhotse face.

However, you will be right under the entire southern wall of Kanchenjunga at Yalung Base Camp and will be totally amazed by its size and grandeur. Our guides from Mountain Rock Treks have been here many times before, yet they are still impressed by the mountain itself.

Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek Cost 2026 and 2027

The Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek cost starts from $1350 per person for a standard group package. Additionally, we have private and custom packages available for 2026 and 2027 upon request. All of our pricing is completely transparent.

You can expect to pay exactly what you see, so there are no hidden fees or last-minute surprises, and you will not have to have any uncomfortable discussions with your guide when you finish your trek.

Is the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek Worth the Cost?

Our professional opinion and the opinions of all of the trekkers we assist were the same: a definite yes. Here is a breakdown of how much value $1,350 will provide you:

  • Fully guided, fully supported trekking in this beautiful wilderness setting for 13 days.

  • The chance to see the Yalung Glacier and the South Face of the 3rd tallest mountain in the world;

  • All logistics taken care of for you - permit approvals, transportation, accommodation, and food, so you can focus on enjoying your trek and not worrying about anything else;

  • All guides who have walked this trail many times before know every aspect of the trail, such as twists, turns, hazards, and enjoyment, so that they can provide you with great advice and assistance along the trail.

  • A life experience that most people on this planet will never have.

When comparing a 13-day European vacation, a resort holiday, or even a domestic adventure trip and an all-inclusive package of the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek with Mountain Rock Treks, it is clear that you are getting fantastic value for money.

Is Kanchenjunga in India or Nepal?

This has been one of the most frequently asked questions about Kanchenjunga. Technically speaking, it borders both India (specifically, the state of Sikkim) and Nepal. Thus, Kanchenjunga is a shared natural marvel between two different countries.

However, the two main trekking base camps located at the north and south base camps are both only accessible via the Nepal side through the Taplejung district, which lies in the eastern region of the country.

On the Indian side of Kanchenjunga lies the Khangchendzonga National Park in Sikkim, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are only limited opportunities for trekking on the Indian side.

This means that the trails on the Indian side are much more basic and undeveloped than those located on the Nepal side, there is much greater restriction on permits that are issued for individuals wanting to trek on the Indian side, and the "classic" base camp experience that many trekkers are searching for is definitely found on the Nepal side.

Why the Nepal Side Offers the Best Kanchenjunga Trekking Experience

  • Access to South Base Camp (Yalung 4,580m) and North Base Camp (5,143m) from Nepal

  • Richer culture due to no mass tourism and a great deal of interaction with authentic Limbu and Rai villages

  • One of the world’s most biodiverse Conservation Areas is the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area

  • Far Superior infrastructure, teahouse network, and availability of guides on the Nepal side

  • For South Kanchenjunga trekking, Mountain Rock Treks operates from the Nepal side, providing a full, undiluted Kanchenjunga experience.

Is Kanchenjunga South Base Camp the Hardest Trek in Nepal?

The Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek is considered one of the most challenging and isolated trekking routes in Nepal. However, whether or not it truly is the hardest trek in Nepal depends largely on your definition of "difficulty".

What Makes the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek So Challenging?

The challenge of completing this trekking route is caused by the remoteness and duration, not just the altitude. As opposed to the Everest Base Camp trek, where a rescue helicopter can arrive at your location within 1hr drive from almost anywhere, there are sincerely remote (and not very accessible) portions of the Kanchenjunga trek.

There are no medical services (or advanced medical care) beyond Taplejung. One of the other reasons for being challenged is that there are no truly maintained trails on this trekking route compared to some of the other popular trekking routes. Additionally, the weather can change quickly (and dramatically) above 3,500M in elevation.

With the right preparation/care, proper equipment, and by following Mountain Rock Treks' safety protocols, this is achievable for any physically fit individual who has a desire to finish what they start. In part, the challenge of this trek enhances the reward approximately 10-fold.

Kanchenjunga and K2 Are the Same or Not?

No, Kanchenjunga and K2 are not the same mountains, as K2 is the second-highest mountain located on the Border of Pakistan (Gilgit-Baltistan) and China (Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County), and Kanchenjunga is the 3rd highest mountain located on the border between Nepal and Sikkim, India.

While both K2 and Kanchenjunga are two of the most challenging mountains in the world, they are both located at opposite ends of Asia, K2 situated in the Karakoram range of Pakistan and Kanchenjunga in the Himalayas of eastern Nepal.

All base camp treks to K2 are distinctly different from those to Kanchenjunga and are presented with different countries, cultures, topography, and logistical challenges.

Mountain Rock Treks is solely focused on the Nepal Himalayas and all of our guides have extensive first-hand experience in the Kanchenjunga area; the trails, climate, local communities and of course the mountain itself. Having this specific local knowledge is what separates a successful trek from an exceptional trek.

How Mountain Rock Treks Makes This Journey Safe and Unforgettable

Mountain Rock Treks' mission is to ensure a safe and authentic adventure on every trek. Our Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek guides are not just following the path; they are also trained to handle emergencies as certified Wilderness First Responders, equipped with pulse oximeters, emergency oxygen, and complete first aid kits during each trek.

Our itinerary has been specifically designed to include a mandatory acclimatization day (Day 2 - Cheram) with a strict "never ascend if symptomatic" policy that has produced a base camp success rate of over 92%.

Our guides do not simply make sure you are safe; they help make your experience unique by offering insights into rare species of animals during the trek, sharing folklore from the Limbu tribe regarding their spiritual connection to Kanchenjunga, and knowing the best place to stand at base camp to capture the photo that will mark your journey.

Each aspect of your trekking experience has been taken care of so that you can relax and enjoy the moment.

Our Success Trips

We summited the summit and traveled to Nepal with thousands of people. Still, our true victory is to get your destination that brings us to the top with our complete service of trekking, mountaineering, and adventure tours.

You will want to take a stroll at night to see things like the Boudhanath Stupa or Thamel Chowk to experience the city's energy prior to retiring for a good night's sleep before an incredible Himalayan adventure. Also, our local expert will explain the cultures of the Rai and Limbu ethnic groups you will be visiting during the trek.

Mountain Rock Treks' team will provide transportation to Tribhuvan International Airport for your early morning domestic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur Airport, located in the flat area of Mechi Zone in far-east Nepal on the Mechi River.

Upon landing, our driver will be waiting to take you on a scenic drive from Bhadrapur airport to Fikkal or Kanyam, which takes between 5 and 6 hours. And you'll drive along the route of the Kankai River and through the lowlands to where the land begins to rise into the hills. This route will take you past beautiful tea estates and cardamom farms of Ilam District and then through the village of Ilam Bazar before you arrive at either Fikkal or Kanyam.

Both Fikkal and Kanyam sit atop large valleys where there are well-manicured tea estates. And our team will assist you with your overnight accommodations in Fikkal or Kanyam.

  • 1,500 m

This morning, our Mountain Rock Treks team will depart from Fikkal (via road) on our way to Taplejung (the administrative headquarters for Taplejung District and the primary entry point into the Kanchenjunga Region). The route travels through numerous Limbu communities and terraced hills before passing through Phidim (a small town) and descending into the valley of the mighty Tamur River (the Tamur Koshi).

Much of the road between Fikkal and Taplejung runs along the course of the Tamur before climbing once again to reach Taplejung. While on the road, our team will also point out the Pathivara Devi Temple (the holy hilltop shrine that is a prominent pilgrimage site in eastern Nepal). Once in Taplejung, our team will have completed all the required Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permits and other documentation to begin trekking tomorrow.

The trek officially starts today, as the Mountain Rock Treks team leads you out of Taplejung Bazaar onto the trail heading southwest. The trail descends slowly through the village of Lalikharka and continues through Khokling, a very small settlement which is bordered by cardamom plantations and bamboo groves.

In addition to crossing several tributary streams along the way that drain into the Simbua Khola, a major river which our team will follow for the majority of the southern route, we will cross several suspension bridges over flowing tributaries, providing us with some thrills along the way.

The trail begins to ascend gradually as we make our way through mixed subtropical forests. The final destination for the day is Yamphuding, the traditional Limbu settlement surrounded by terraced fields, where we will see the peaks of the Yalung Glacier catchment area starting to show on the distant skyline.

  • Tea House
  • Breakfast- Lunch- Dinner
  • 5 to 6 hours
  • 2,080 m

The Mountain Rock Treks team will leave from Yamphuding along a gently inclining trail which follows the Simbua Khola upstream toward high mountain ranges. The route passes Tortong (a forested campsite and a traditional yak herder's rest stop), surrounded by massive walls of trees including rhododendrons, oaks and magnolias.

After Tortong, the trail runs along the western side of the Simbua Khola, traversing wooden bridges and passing cascading waterfalls which merge into the river below, draining off the surrounding slopes. The air is cooling off due to the elevation, creating a clearer, brighter atmosphere with better visibility for photographing the nearby mountaintops.

Today's destination is New Jhoroni/Torontan, located at the bottom of a large glacial valley. From this campsite, on clear nights, it is possible to see both the jagged ridgelines of Rathong Peak and the Kabru Massif.

  • 2,700 m

The day will be an amazing, long and vertical ascent as we make our way from New Jhoroni to Cheram (Tseram). The trail is also part of the Lasiya Bhanjyang high mountain pass (a very spiritual location), covered in lots of prayer flags; it marks our arrival at the Upper Yalung Valley of the Yalung Khola.

Along the way, you will hear the sound of the Simbua Khola River and its glacial water tributaries rushing through the valley, and at some points, the trees begin to thin out, allowing for views of the large alpine meadows with their yak pastures. Along our trek, we will see many stone Chorten or mani walls; these are religious monuments that identify our entering a very religious place belonging to the Sherpa and Tibetan highland people.

You will see some spectacular views of Talung Peak (7349m), Kabru North (7338m) and Rathong Peak (6678m). You will find a "warm" shelter for sleeping at the tea houses at Cheram.

  • Tea House
  • Breakfast- Lunch- Dinner
  • 6 to7 hours
  • 3,870 m

We are going to spend this important day resting and acclimating at Cheram. With the principle of "Climb high, sleep low" in mind, our guides will take you on a short excursion of 3 hours to a higher elevation on the Yalung Glacier moraine to an area where you will have a great view of Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), Yalung Kang (8,505 m), Talung Peak, and Kabru South (7,317 m).

From Cheram, you can see the Yalung Glacier (one of the largest glaciers in Nepal) covering the entire valley floor. Your guides will also point out the route to Ramche and Oktang. Himalayan Tahr, snow pigeons, and the occasional red panda can all be seen living on the slopes of the Yalung Valley.

The Yalung Valley is a holy valley to the people of Nepal, and there are many ancient stone walls and piles of prayer stones in different locations.

  • 2-3 hours (optional)
  • 3,870 m

The Highlight of the Expedition. Our Mountain Rock Treks Team leaves Cheram and will steadily ascend through the lateral moraine of the Yalung Glacier, arriving at Ramche and continuing to Oktang (Kanchenjunga South Base Camp at a true elevation of 4,580 m).

We will have many moments where we will be crossing glacial streams and moraines, traversed high-altitude grasslands, and we will enjoy our first day in the most amazing panoramic view of all these peaks together (Kanchenjunga – 8,586 m; Yalung Kang – 8,505 m; Kabru Dome – 6,600 m) from Oktang as well as the entire Yalung Glacier Icefall. Celebrate this accomplishment with our team before moving back down.

The Rathong Khola will follow below us as we continue back to Ramche Village, where we will be sleeping in stone teahouses.

  • Tea House
  • Breakfast- Lunch- Dinner
  • 6 to 7 hours
  • 4,580 m

The journey back to our starting point of the trek begins today, with our Mountain Rock Treks team travelling from Ramche back down the trail through Cheram and all the way to Torongding (2,980m). This is an extremely long but rewarding descent over 7 hours. Since we will be retracing the Yalung Valley trail (which we used to ascend), we will come across the prayer-flag-covered Lasiya Bhanjyang again.

Then we will descend into the forest zone along the Simbua Khola valley. As the river receives a greater volume of glacial meltwater, it will continue to grow louder and faster. Our team will need to cross several wooden bridges and negotiate rocky trails through the New Jhoroni area to reach Torongding. This small, restful riverside community is nestled along a narrow valley with the Simbua Khola directly beneath.

Due to the decline in elevation, the temperature will be noticeably warmer, and we'll hear many songs from the birds that live in the forest surrounding us.

  • Tea House
  • Breakfast- Lunch- Dinner
  • 5 to 6 hours
  • 2,980 m

The Mountain Rock Treks crew now makes the U-turn back to Yamphuding by taking an easy 6-hour trek south along the Simbua Khola Valley. During this portion of the return journey, we pass through the lush forest again that grows along the route to Tortong. And the trees form an awe-inspiring roof of branches and flowers.

After reaching Tortong, we'll remain close to the river banks while crossing suspension bridges in order to get to the larger valley where we'll find the terraced farmland of Yamphuding. And along this part of the trek, we'll be able to view small seasonal settlements used by local herders as well as occasional Limbu-style homesteads along the route.

As we near Yamphuding, we'll no longer see many plants from the temperate region but rather a significant percentage of subtropical ones. And our guides will also give us brief information about any herbal medicine or other plant knowledge pertaining to the various herbal medicines we encountered along this section of the trail.

After our magnificent journey through the hospitality of the teahouses found in the village of Yamphuding, we'll settle down for a comfortable sleep at one of those very same teahouses.

As we return from our trekking route, you will be provided with both road and trail transport to get back to the beginning of the trek. This will be done by using the trail back to Taplejung Bazaar through Khokling and Lalikharka; then you will take a 3-4 vehicle (van) trip south to Taplejung Bazaar, via Phidim, and the rolling hills of Panchthar District, descending through cardamom and tea plantations down towards the Kankai River Valley.

The road will take you through Ilam before you ascend back to the cooler climate of the hill stations of Fikkal and Kanyam. You will celebrate your successful trek with our Mountain Rock Treks' staff at a warm celebratory dinner in a fresh tea garden in eastern Nepal.

Our Mountain Rock Treks team drives down from the hill station through the lowlands of Mechi Zone to the airport at Bhadrapur, the location close to the Mechi rivers (which are one of E. Nepal's sacred rivers, which together with the Mechi River form the border between Nepal and India).

On your 45-minute domestic flight back to Kathmandu, you will be treated to magnificent views over the Terai (Plains), the Churais and eventually the Kathmandu Valley (which is surrounded/dominated by the distant Himalayan Range).

After you clear customs at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, your company representative will meet you at the airport and show you to your hotel in Thamel. In the afternoon, there will be the opportunity to go to Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple or do some shopping along Freak Street.

That evening, your Mountain Rock Treks team will join you for an optional farewell dinner to celebrate the achievements of all who participated in this great adventure.

If you have time in the morning, we suggest that you take one final stroll in Thamel or enjoy one last cup of tea at a cafe overlooking the Boudhanath Stupa.

While your plane climbs above the Kathmandu Valley, you may have a chance to see one final view of the high Himalayas as you fly off into the sunset over the eastern horizon of Kanchenjunga (8586 m).

Kanchenjunga Conservation Area is one of Nepal's most crucial protected ecosystems. It's approximately 2,035 square kilometres in size and was originally designated as a conservation area in 1997. It contains a unique variety of habitats ranging from subtropical forests at an elevation of 1,200 metres to perpetual snowfields above 5,000 metres. While trekking through the trail, the guides from Mountain Rock Treks spot red pandas in bamboo groves close to Yamphuding, Himalayan black bears in mid-altitude forests and snow leopard tracks on the higher alpine slopes near Cheram.

And they provide updates to their clients on the local fauna throughout. The KCA is also a paradise for bird watchers as the area has an extremely diverse variety of birds, including some species that are critically endangered, such as the Spiny Babbler, plus many pheasant species and golden eagles that ride the thermals above the glacier. The KCA is a living, breathing wilderness. And our guides appreciate the opportunity to hike through it.

Limbu Culture and Local Villages

The Kanchenjunga region is home to the Limbu people, the oldest group of indigenous people in Nepal. They have a long-standing tradition of oral history, practise an indigenous form of worship and also enjoy a long history of being a powerful warrior culture.

When our Mountain Rock Treks team accompanies you through villages such as Yamphuding and Torongding, you'll be met with hospitality from a community that hasn't yet moved away from the rhythms of the mountain. And that includes farming terraced millet, raising cardamom, constructing timber-based homes and participating in the sacred celebration of the Kanchenjunga God.

Our guides represent many of the people of eastern Nepal and act as safe cultural connectors to allow you to experience authentic interactions with the families they lead you to visit. And it's more than just being photographed for the album. This cultural aspect can't be found anywhere else with the same depth of experience as that found along the Everest and Annapurna trails.

Is the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek Safe in 2026?

Yes, the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek is safe and well managed if you have a reputable operator and are prepared before you arrive. A lot of the risks associated with the trek are acute mountain sickness, injuries from remote trails and unpredictable weather. But our team at Mountain Rock Treks has extensive training regarding each of these risks.

For every trek we have emergency oxygen and satellite communications devices. And we maintain constant contact with the helicopter rescue teams in Kathmandu and require all our clients to have a helicopter evacuation insurance policy once they leave.

The guides won't allow any client to climb with an AMS symptom under any circumstances. And the trail network is well established and the teahouses are reliable with shelter and food. So while the risks exist, they can be managed through planning, experience and a good team.

Best Time to Do the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek

Spring (March–May): Our #1 Choice

The best time to trek to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp is in the spring. The rhododendron trees between the town of Taplejung and the village of Cheram bloom with magnificent shades of red/pink. The flowering trees are amazing to see; they create a visual experience that is breathtaking. As such, you will find comfortable temperatures, dry trails and clear views of the mountains during your trek; our Mountain Rock Treks team members recommend to you that the best month to trek in this area would be in April.

Autumn (September-November): Bright, Clear Days and Great Weather

After the monsoon season, autumn has the best sky conditions and the best weather stability for the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp trek. There are also great visibility conditions, which allow you to see the Sikkim Himalayas clearly, as well as having very clear skies to trek with. The month of October is considered to be the best month to hike to the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp and is second overall on our list of recommended months for trekking to this beautiful location.

Monsoon (June-August) and Winter (December-February): What are the Risks?

The monsoon season is associated with heavy rainfall, leeches and landslides on the trails; we recommend that for your own safety, you do not attempt to hike to the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp during this time. Also, due to heavy snowfalls above 3,000 m, the trails from Cheram to base camp during the winter months will become very unsafe. Due to safety reasons, our company does not run any scheduled departures in the winter months.

Teahouse Conditions Along the Trails

You'll find teahouses throughout the Kanchenjunga trail. They'll be basic but you'll get what you need to survive. Rooms are typically simple twin bedrooms with foam mattresses, thin pillows and basic blankets. The tea houses are clean. But they're not luxurious. Quite often you'll be able to reach out and touch the wall of your neighbour's room. And there's no heating at teahouses located above 3,000m, so it's cold. Bring with you the best possible sleeping bag rated to -10°C regardless of what season or the expected low temperatures.

And as you trek up the mountain, you'll find that teahouses become increasingly basic. Cheram and Ramche, located at the upper end of the Kanchenjunga trail, offer the most basic facilities along the entire trail. And the Mountain Rock Treks team will pre-select the best teahouses available at each potential stop to give you as much comfort as possible.

Food Options at High Altitude

Dal bhat is the mainstay food option available at every teahouse on the Kanchenjunga trail. It's rice and lentil soup, usually with some combination of vegetables or garlic. And it's very nutritious, hot and one of the best high altitude food choices available to you on the entire Kanchenjunga trail. Other reliable items when you're trekking at elevations of 3,000m and above include noodle soup, vegetable fried rice, porridge, chapati, eggs, black tea and hot cooked meat.

But when trekking at altitudes above Taplejung, non-cooked salad, non-peeled fruit and non-cooked meat can't be guaranteed to be safe due to the unavailability of refrigeration on the trail. And eating these foods could put trekkers at significant risk of food poisoning. So the Mountain Rock Treks team strongly recommends that all trekkers eat hot, freshly prepared meals while trekking on the Kanchenjunga trail only.

Connectivity, Charging, and Toilet Facilities on the Route

You can find some mobile phone networks after Taplejung (mobile connectivity is near impossible after Cheram). NTC SIM cards have the best signal strength in eastern Nepal, but don’t use them to navigate or get in contact with anyone. A few of the lower altitude teahouses will have WiFi for approx $1-$2 per session (expect very slow speeds).

Most teahouses allow you to charge your electronic devices and charge approx $1-$2 per device. Bring a power bank with you as a backup. Most teahouses have squat toilet facilities; however, above Yamphuding, it will be hard to find bath facilities in most teahouses. You can find hot water shower facilities at the lower elevations ($2-$3). After Cheram, hot showers are no longer available. Bring wet wipes; they will be your best friend on this trek.

What Permits are Required for the South Side Kanchenjunga Trek?

Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP) - NPR 3000 will need to be purchased through Nepal's Tourism Board, which gives you access to the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and funds local conservation efforts, as well as some of Mountain Rock Treks' own Community projects.

Restricted Area Permit: Restricted, as Kanchenjunga is a trekking area where trekking independently is not allowed without using an authorized trekking company. There is a USD 10 per person/per week permit fee. You must be with a group of 2 or more trekkers (who use a licensed guide) to obtain a permit. This is a big part of keeping this trail/area from becoming overcrowded, and we at Mountain Rock Treks really appreciate this rule!

How Mountain Rock Treks will make all the arrangements for you (don't worry about the hassle).

Our company will arrange all of your permits (KCAP, TIMS, and conservation fees) for you before you arrive in Nepal. When you arrive in Kathmandu for your trek, you will go through a briefing with our team, with all your permit arrangements already in place. You will have nothing to worry about, and no confusion!

Documents You Need to Provide to Mountain Rock Treks

Our team requires the following to process both permits on your behalf:

  • A clear photocopy of your passport (photo page)

  • A copy of your valid Nepal visa

  • Two passport-sized photographs

  • Your travel insurance information (policy number and emergency contact)

Once you have confirmed your booking, send these through to our team, and we will take care of the rest. Normally, you would get a permit within 2 working days after handing in your documents in Kathmandu.

How Difficult Is the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek?

When trekking every day for over 5 to 7 hours, you will be gaining a total elevation of 1,400 m (Kathmandu) to 4,580 m (base camp). The most physically challenging single-day climb is on Day 6 from New Jhoroni to Cheram, where you will gain almost 1,200 m in a 7-hour time span. Our guides have described this segment of the trek as “demanding but extremely rewarding.”

Training Plan Suggested by Our Lead Guides

To better prepare you for this trek, we suggest starting to train 8 to 12 weeks prior to your departure date.

Week 1-4

45-minute of brisk walking per day and stair climbing

Week 5-8

Hiking on the weekends for 4-6 hrs with a loaded daypack

Week 9-12

Full-day hikes with elevation gain (minimum of 2000 m) if possible

Altitude Sickness on the Kanchenjunga Trek has Real Dangers and Solutions

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can be a concern after an elevation of 3,000 m. All guides at Mountain Rock Treks have completed training in Wilderness First Responder, as well as carry a pulse oximeter, emergency oxygen, and Diamox with them on each trek. The acclimatization day at Cheram, in addition to our strict policy of “never ascent if symptomatic,” will be how we protect you against AMS.

  • Smaller Group Size: Mountain Rock Treks has a maximum of 12 people for our guided Kanchenjunga trek trips and 6 people for a private guided trek. FAQs

  • Q1. What is the difference between the Kanchenjunga North and South Base Camp?

There are two different base camps on either side of the same mountain. The South Base Camp at Oktang, 4,580m, sits at the edge of the Yalung Glacier and provides a direct frontal view of Kanchenjunga's southern wall. It's also shorter and at a lower elevation than the North Base Camp. The North Base Camp at Pangpema, 5,143m, is at a greater altitude, more remote and requires a longer walk-in, usually 16 to 18 days. It has views of the north face of Kanchenjunga and the Kanchenjunga Glacier. And the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek links them both on a route of 18 to 21 days if you want to see both. For first-time visitors to Kanchenjunga, our team recommends the South Base Camp as a starting base.

  • Yes. We highly recommend at least one multi-day trek under your belt, for example, the Annapurna Base Camp or Langtang Valley Trek, prior to attempting Kanchenjunga. And six to seven hours a day walking on remote terrain takes reasonable fitness and knowledge to cope with fatigue and altitude.

  • No. Kanchenjunga is a Restricted Area. So by law, you need a licensed guide and a registered trekking agency. And even if it were allowed, we'd recommend against going without one. It's a remote trail, badly marked in places, and emergency help is hours away.

  • Absolutely yes. Mountain Rock Treks runs regular departures with solo female trekkers. And our guides are well-trained professionals, and the local communities of this region are welcoming, friendly and safe. Female guide pairings can also be arranged upon request.

  • Mountain Rock Treks has a base camp success rate of over 92% with an itinerary that focuses on acclimatisation. And the main reasons trekkers don't reach base camp are existing health issues and a failure to acclimatise, both of which we screen for and work proactively with.

  • Yes. We have a 21 to 24-day North and South Base Camp circuit. Contact our team for a bespoke itinerary and pricing. It's one of the most adventurous trekking circuits in all of the Himalaya.

  • Yes. A licensed guide is required by law as Kanchenjunga is a Restricted Area. And in addition to being a legal requirement, the trail is remote and poorly marked in places. Our senior Mountain Rock Treks guides have years of experience on this very route. And their knowledge truly is priceless.

  • From Kathmandu, you fly to Bhadrapur in eastern Nepal on a domestic flight and then take a 5 to 6-hour scenic drive to Fikkal or Kanyam towards the official trek gateway at Taplejung. Mountain Rock Treks handles all transportation from your arrival at Kathmandu airport.

  • We advise that this trek is strictly for those 16 years or older, as it can be difficult and has a very isolated environment. Trekkers above the age of 60 are permitted but required to submit a recent medical fitness certificate. And the Mountain Rock Treks team reviews fitness on an individual basis, so get in touch for a personal assessment.

  • No. There are no ATMs or banking facilities on the trail once you leave Taplejung. So we recommend withdrawing enough Nepali rupees in Kathmandu before heading off. And our team at Mountain Rock Treks will send a comprehensive day-wise budgeting guide to every confirmed trekker in advance of departure.

  • Yes. Mountain Rock Treks require all Kanchenjunga trekkers to have insurance that covers helicopter evacuation, with no exceptions. And due to the extreme remoteness of the trail, helicopter evacuation is the only realistic option for a serious medical emergency. Prior to the start of your trek, we'll validate that you're covered by an insurance policy.

  • I Came for the Mountain. I Left With Something Much Bigger

That acclimatisation day at Cheram saved my trek. I felt strong at base camp while other people from different groups were struggling badly. Safety before speed is obviously Mountain Rock Treks' motto. And that attention to detail is precisely what you want on a trail this remote.
