Monsoon Season Disruptions: Challenges in Operating Kathmandu to Surkhe Jeep Services

During the rainy season in Nepal, which is usually from June to August, continuous heavy rain seriously impacts the functioning of jeep transport services between Surkhe and Kathmandu. Continuous rains further worsen road conditions, with muddy and wet roads, and increase the level of landslides so that it is unsafe and even impossible to ride over these roads.

The risky weather conditions in the monsoon season generally necessitate jeep service suspension in a bid to provide safety for passengers. During the rest of the seasons, the operating conditions for such provision are good. Autumn months (September-November) and spring (March-May) have clearer weather with more stable atmospheric conditions and, therefore, provide safer and more convenient conditions for traveling. Winter months, as cold in nature as they are, are also favorable to effective conditions for providing jeep services.

Day to Day Info

Departure and Morning Drive Early (4:30 AM – 8:00 AM)

There is an early morning departure for a morning drive to Surke in Kathmandu. The departure is normally at 4:30 AM. Early departure gives tourists the opportunity to drive on city roads in the morning when streets are not crowded, hence easy exit from the capital on time. The jeep travels in the east direction on the BP Highway, with good tarmac and thus a relatively smooth ride. The drive is along Dhulikhel, a village renowned for the breathtaking Himalayan scenery and old Newari culture.

The morning's cold in the air and the gentle thump of the sun over rice fields greet the day in style. Breakfast is typically had at Dhulikhel, where continental and Nepalese cuisine can be had at the village restaurants, which form a good meal to get the tourist ready for the day's journey.

Drive from Mid-Morning to Afternoon (8:00 AM – 2:00 PM)

Following breakfast, the drive begins again along the BP Highway through the stunning countryside of rolling green hills and dense forests, along with the occasional village. The drive is a great drive on pretty good roads, so it is easy to travel. The jeep then drives a short distance into Ghurmi, a small village along the Sunkoshi River, for lunch.

Lunch is perfectly situated here as it can afford the tourists a place to sit and rest a little on their feet while providing a meal of Nepali food, dal bhat (a lentil soup with rice) and momos (also known as dumplings). The restful green hills and the gently lapping river provide just the right place to break from the threat, expel the sense of danger, and forge ahead once more.

Afternoon to Evening Drive (2:00 PM – 6:30 PM)

The latter half of the trek in the afternoon is demanding; the jeep makes a sudden turn off the roads after Salleri, the administrative headquarters of the Solukhumbu District, and drives on bumpy off-road trails. The road later drives on uneven trails, passing suspension bridges across the Dudh Koshi River and across villages of Kharikhola and Bupsa. The villages give a hint of the lives of the people, such as old homes, terrace fields, and the occasional sight of yaks and mules loaded.

The view becomes more scenic with the steep ridges and snow-capped mountains in the back. Despite the bad road, the view is interesting, misleading the travelers and making the experience unforgettable. The jeep transports the travellers late in the evening to Surke village, a village at the foot of Lukla. The overnight stay of the guests is in a teahouse or guesthouse in the village and they enjoy a much-needed Nepali dinner.

Weather Considerations Regarding The Kathmandu to Surkhet jeep Facility

Traveling from Kathmandu to Surkhe by private jeep is a great way to see the varying geography and weather of different seasons in Nepal. There are different tradeoffs for each part of the year.

Winter (December to February): Winter can be very cool, but it can also be the time of the clearest views you will have over the Himalayas. The roads are generally easier to drive on during the winter because they are dry most of the time. Just be ready for cold and windy weather depending if you travel in the winter.

Spring (March to May): Spring is humid and mild with temperatures. This is also a beautiful time of year when the rhododendron trees bloom, which makes for a nice, fresh travel experience with the nicer flowers. However, spring is a great time to travel.

Summer/Monsoon (June to September): The heavy rains of the monsoon can make the roads muddy and slippery and increase the risk of landslides. Because of these conditions, driving is less preferable and more dangerous, as is the Everest Base Camp trek, which is also not conducted during the Monsoon Time.

Autumn (October to November): After the monsoon season once the weather has stabilized with clear skies and moderately warm temperatures, the roads will be in good condition, and the lush vegetation will be surrounding the roads. This is the best time to make this journey.

The choices range from basic teahouses to garden-based luxury lodges with balcony rooms and outdoor dining patios, landscaped. Client Reviews

  • Seamless Adventure: Kathmandu to Surkhe Jeep Journey

The Jeep trip was one of our trip highlights! A local tour company Mountain Rock guide accompanied us, explaining local history at stops. We passed through Sherpa homelands unseen by air—centuries-old monasteries, yak caravans, and turquoise rivers. Their drivers carried emergency medical kits and satellite phones. Admittedly, the ride is very tiring, but its is one of the safest options to reach the Lukla. We booked the private jeep ride for comfort—worth the extra.

  • Safe, Scenic, and Reliable Jeep Service to Lukla

Shared jeep was great value compared to helicopter backups. At 4:30 AM in Thamel we were picked up by Mountain Rock;s guide. The good conditions of the Jeep handled Salieri's steep hills with ease. While seats were rigid, the crew provided fleece blankets and thermoses of hot water. We reached Surkhe by 7 PM, exhausted but thrilled to have avoided Luka’s fog. The company guides at the Lukla had our permits ready—no wait whatsoever. This route adds one extra day but cuts out all weather anxiety as well as the cancellations and Lukla flight postponement. Perfect for monsoon trekkers.
