What to Expect from a Short Manaslu circuit trek?

Shorter Timeframe

Are you in Nepal for 10 days or less but want to do a Manaslu circuit trek that takes at least 15-20 days to complete? We present an alternative to the long Manaslu Circuit trek that can be completed in 9 days. And the good part of the trek is that you can expect the same highlight of the longer Manslcu trek and that within the shorter time frame.

Off-the-beaten-path trail

The Manaslu circuit trek offers an adventure of hiking on the off-beaten path as it is recently accessible to travellers, contributing to its relative solitude. Additionally, the government has designated it as a restricted area to preserve the region's natural and cultural heritage.

This short trek's remoteness and limited infrastructure set it apart, making it distinct from other hiking routes. Despite being a teahouse trek, the authenticity of the experience is maintained due to the traditional way of life of the local people. Therefore, it is considered one of the most remote and less-travelled hiking routes.

Natural Encounter During The trek

The short Manaslu circuit trek takes you via the same path as longer ones, providing amazing views of the snow capped mountains like Manaslu,  Kanguru, Larke Peak, Ganesh Himal,  Cheo Hima, Annapurna and other famous mountains of the region. Moreover, you get beautiful views of the serene rivers, pristine landscapes, and green forest that nourish the souls of the ones who visit the area. Traverse the renowned Annapurna and Manaslu conservation areas, allowing you to delve into the region's abundant and endangered flora and fauna, including Himalayan Tahr, Snow Leopard, and other remarkable species.

Crossing Larkya la pass

Larke La Pass, located at an altitude of 5,160 metres, is gaining popularity among trekkers. And with this trek, you get to cross the high passes of Nepal. This pass, the highest point on the Manaslu circuit trek, is renowned as one of the most challenging in the Himalayan region. Undertaking the Manaslu circuit trek offers trekkers the opportunity for some of the most exhilarating Himalayan experiences. The ascent to the pass is arduous and will test your determination repeatedly. However, once you reach the summit, words cannot do justice to the breathtaking view or the overwhelming sense of achievement you'll experience. It's something you must witness for yourself and perhaps the main reason why you should do this short Manaslu Circuit trek.

Is Short Manaslu Circuit Trek Right For You?

This Manaslu circuit trek takes you to the uncrowded and secluded parts of nepal. This remote part boasts an off beaten trail with drivrese and magnificent  mountain scenery around Mt. Manaslu. While  modernization and advancement have left their mark on other trekking routes, Manaslu has retained its tranquil and pristine character in numerous areas. Being designated as a Restricted Trekking Area has protected the precious flora, fauna, and the enduring cultural and traditional heritage of the region.

The short Manaslu circuit trek of 9 days is an adventure worth considering if you assess whether it aligns with your fitness level, interests, and time constraints.

Firstly, for trekkers with a good level of physical fitness, this trek offers a rewarding and challenging experience. It's an opportunity to explore the breathtaking Himalayan landscapes, including the Budhi Gandaki River, stunning waterfalls, suspension bridges, and more, making it an attractive option for those who relish active journeys. So, if you are someone who can walk for at least 6-7 hours a day, then this trek is definitely worth investing in.

Moreover, if you are eager to learn about Tibetan culture and traditions, this trek provides an excellent chance for interested ones. The region's closeness to the Tibetan border allows you to immerse yourself in the unique Tibetan culture, distinct from other parts of Nepal.

The Short Manaslu Circuit Trek is also suitable for hikes with limited time. While still showcasing the beauty of the Manaslu region, it offers a condensed version of the longer circuit, making it suitable for those with limited time restraints here.

Moreover, unlike the longer version of Manaslu Trek, which can be time-consuming, the Rapid Trek provides a shorter yet enriching experience. This shortness allows trekkers the flexibility to embark on other popular journeys in Nepal. With the longer version of the Manaslu Circuit, such as Itinerary, and joining other treks like the Annapurna Circuit trek, it is limited due to its lengthy duration.

Moreover, one of the shorter Manaslu Trek's standout features is its  opportunity to join the famous Annapurna Circuit after completing this trek. Similarly, completing the Rapid Manaslu Circuit Trek allows you to join the renowned Annapurna Circuit Trek, maximising your exploration of Nepal's breathtaking landscapes in both the Manaslu and Annapurna areas.

Additional Info To Know

Is Rapid Manaslu Trek Altitude Friendly?

The Rapid Manaslu Trek can be considered altitude-friendly due to its relatively low elevation and the manageable hiking distances involved. Despite the absence of designated acclimatisation days in the itinerary, the trek is designed to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.

The trek generally starts at a relatively low elevation of 900 metres in the lower regions, specifically at Machha Khola. You'll walk about 6-7 hours each day for the first three days. You'll cover a relatively short distance from Machha Khola to Deng during this initial part of the trek. Altitude sickness symptoms typically start to emerge at around 2400 metres. Since you'll still be at lower elevations during this period, the risk of experiencing altitude sickness is significantly reduced.

On the fourth day, you'll trek from Namrung at 2630 meters to Samagaun at 3520 meters. The distance between Namrung and Samagaun is relatively short, spanning just 17.7 kilometers (10.9 miles), and can be completed in 5 to 6 hours. Again, the manageable distance and short hiking hours contribute to a lower risk of altitude sickness.

Similarly, on the sixth day, you'll trek from Samagaun at 3520 meters to Dharamshala at 4460 meters. The distance between these two points is less than 12 kilometers. This relatively short distance minimizes the likelihood of altitude sickness during this part of the trek.

The most challenging section regarding altitude is when you reach Larkya La Pass at around 5106 meters while passing through Bimtang. At this point, you are slightly more prone to altitude sickness due to the higher elevation. However, it is manageable with proper preparation, acclimatisation, and guidance from experienced trek leaders.

In short, the Rapid Manaslu Trek can be considered altitude-friendly despite not including designated acclimatisation days. This is mainly due to the trek's lower elevations in the initial days, the short distances covered daily, and the support experienced guides provide. While the Larkya La Pass presents a higher altitude challenge, it is still manageable with the right precautions and support. Therefore, if you follow the trek itinerary and guidelines experienced trek operators provide, you can enjoy this adventure with a reduced risk of altitude sickness.

Permits Required for Rapid Manaslu Circuit Trek?

Manaslu Circuit trek takes you to the restricted area of the region. This means trekkers must obtain the necessary permits for the short Manaslu Circuit trek. You can get this permit with the help of a valid local Nepali travel agency. Manaslu Circuit Trek is an off-beat trek that was first opened for trekkers as it was restricted back in 1992 and has maintained its status. Thus, solo trekking and independent trekking here are not allowed. Here are the required permits related to the trek below.

Restricted Area Permit for Manaslu

The Manaslu Region in Nepal, from Jagat to Dharapani, requires a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) due to its proximity to the Tibetan border. This permit, essential for tourists, must be presented at Jagat's entry point, with the last checkpoint in Sama Gaun. Only authorised local trekking agencies can obtain the RAP, with costs varying by the season: $100 for the first week, $15 per extra day from September to November, $75 for the first week, and $10 per extra day from December to August.

Manaslu Conservation Area Project

The Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) permit is required to aid in preserving and growing the 1,663 sq. km Manaslu conservation area. Costs are NPR 1000 for SAARC nationals and NPR 3000 for others.

Annapurna Conservation Area Project

The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit is necessary for trekking from Dharapani to BesiSahar, passing through the Annapurna conservation area. It helps conserve the area's biodiversity and trail development. The cost is NRs. 1000 for SAARC nationals and NRs. 3000 for other nationals. Show the permit at the Dharapani entrance check post.

Manaslu circuit trek Is a Restricted Area

Manaslu normally translates to “Mountains of the Spirit" in the local language and "Killer Mountain" in the mountaineering world. The trail is generally less travelled and secluded than in other areas of Nepal.

This means for different trekking and expeditions or any kind of adventure activity, every traveller must get a special restricted area permit to enter, mainly from the Jagat ( Gorkha) to Dharapani (Manang). These places are the main areas listed in the restricted zones list by the Nepal government.

The unique practices, traditions, and lifestyles found in the Manaslu region distinguish it from other Nepalese societies. Likewise, the inhabitants of this area have preserved their purity and authenticity. Therefore, to regulate tourist influx and protect the cultural integrity of the local population, Manaslu is designated as a restricted zone in Nepal.

Best Time for Rapid Manaslu Circuit Trek

Normally, the weather around the Himalayas area of Nepal is always unpredictable. Still, if you are looking for the best time to choose to do this trek, then it's spring and autumn. Trekkers can enjoy the characteristics of this trek in autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May). These seasons offer stable weather, moderate temperatures, and clear skies. Spring showcases vibrant wildflowers and comfortable temperatures, while fall provides crystal-clear mountain views and pleasant trekking conditions. Winter is an option, but it's colder with occasional snowfall and unpredictable weather. However, it's perfect for witnessing stunning sunsets over snowy peaks and experiencing the true beauty of Manaslu Mountain and its surroundings.

What Fitness level is Required to Complete this Rapid Trek?

This rapid Manaslu Circuit Trek offers both challenges and rewards, demanding 6-8 hours of daily walks covering 16 km or more. Crossing Larke La Pass at 5,106m is still the harsh highlight of this trek. As this trek is a rapid trek completed in just nine days, both mental and physical strength are required for success, as rocky trails, long hikes, and changing landscapes and climates test trekkers.

Similarly, awareness of high-altitude sickness and preventive measures is important during this rapid trek. For the Pre-trek preparations, trekkers should include cardio, small hikes, and breathing exercises to improve stamina. Running, swimming, and cycling are also beneficial. Always listen to your trek leader's advice for a successful rapid Manaslu journey.

The rooms at the hea houses are generally cheaper if you have your meal in the same place. If you are looking for nice rooms with extra facilities like attached bathrooms or hot showers, then you can stay in villages like Jagat, Namrung, Sama Gaun, and Bhinthang.

The accommodation in Dharamshala may sometimes be somewhat crowded, and you might need to share a room with other guests. This area only has two tea houses, which can get quite crowded during peak season. Thereafter, the accommodations will include basic, shared rooms with minimal interior decor, including a bed with a comfortable mattress, clean bedsheets, and cushions for your comfort. However, each tea house strives to provide the best possible hospitality.

Internet, Electricity, and Mobile Network Facility

You can access the wifi up to Samdo village, and it becomes available again once you pass Dharamshala, with wifi access resuming from Bimthang onwards. Additionally, most lodges offer phone charging facilities, allowing you to purchase a Nepal Telecom Card (NTC) SIM card, which functions in most areas. You can also find reception phones in Machha Khola, Jagat, Namrung, Samagaun, and Dharapani up to Besisahar. When regular wifi or internet services are unavailable, you can use the mobile network directly for both internet and phone calls using the SIM card. Depending on the altitude, these services may incur charges at hotels, guest houses, and tea houses, typically ranging from Rs 400 to Rs 600.

Difficulty of Rapid Manaslu Circuit Trek

The 9-day Rapid Manaslu Circuit Trek is both challenging and rewarding, covering a 175 km circuit. Unlike longer treks, it lacks acclimatisation days, making it somewhat more difficult. The trail includes rocky paths, steep ascents and descents, suspension bridges, and alpine vegetation. Trekkers with medical conditions must consult with their healthcare providers before booking. Understanding high-altitude sickness, trail conditions, mountain climate, and the atmosphere is equally important for a smoother trek experience here. Also,  be prepared for a demanding adventure through diverse terrain on this captivating trek.
