The Dolpo region is located between the Dhaulagiri peaks and the Tibetan plateau. Before 1989,  when the southern portion of Dolpo was made accessible to organized trekking groups, the entire district was off-limits to hikers. Tours of Kathmandu's UNESCO World Heritage Sites mark the beginning of our trekking trip. Then we take a flight to Nepalgunj and then on to Juphal, where we start our journey through the Dolpo region, made famous by Peter Matthiessen's novel The Snow  Leopard.

Upper Dolpo, also known as Inner Dolpo, is located in a relatively isolated part of Nepal. Even if there are other distant trekking areas in Nepal, Dolpo continues to be one of the most remote destinations. The time, expense, and difficulty of getting there to begin the journey are the causes of the scarcity of trekkers.

Like the rest of Nepal, the Dolpa District is undergoing rapid change. A jeep road has been built across the Inner Dolpo settlements' main axis in recent years. The route travels from the village of  Mischagaon past the village of Chharka before arriving at the base of Sangda La. As of October  2022, mules and ponies carry cargo over Sangda La to the road that leads all the way to Jomsom on the other side.

You might recognize Phoksundo Lake, Shey Gompa, Bon Po adherents, Buddhist temples, views of Dhaulagiri, Crystal Mountain (a mountain whose cliffs are covered in quartz and marine fossils),  distinctive Tibetan cultures, and the gorgeous and endangered snow leopard. Yes, they are, thanks to Peter Matthiessen's book "The Snow Leopard" and Eric Valli's documentary "Himalaya," which depicts Dolpo's life.

The Caravan, Nepal's first Dolpo-focused film with English subtitles, was likewise a tremendous hit and was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film. We see beautiful communities, and trekking routes, and encounter fascinating people on our 28-day walk. We also travel over a couple of difficult Himalayan crossings and take in Phoksundo Lake's expansive and serene splendor. Our hike concludes when we go back to Jhuphal through the historic Trans-Himalayan Trade Route from Shey Gompa. We do enter Nepal's rugged west on the hike.

Upper Dolpo Trek Route for 2025

Access to western Nepal is more challenging than to other regions due to its isolation. To reach  Juphal in the Dolpo district, you must first go to Nepalgunj on the plains. Most travelers arrive in  Nepalgunj by plane from either Pokhara or Kathmandu. From Nepalgunj, a flight to Juphal is taken. (While pricey charter flights can be booked from Pokhara, it is not possible to fly straight  to Juphal from Kathmandu.) The majority of scheduled tours depart from Kathmandu. Remember that Juphal's airport is nothing more than a tiny mountain airstrip where inclement weather frequently causes aircraft delays.

Road travel to Nepalgunj is also possible, however, it takes a while from Kathmandu or Pokhara.  Although Western Nepal's roads are getting better, Juphal is still a few days' walks from the closest road head.

What is the best time for Upper Dolpo trek?

Upper Dolpo Trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Upper Dolpo region of Nepal is one of the least populated and most secluded areas of the country. It is primarily a rain-shadow region behind the massive Dhaulagiri and Kanjiruwa massif. It is a complete Trans-Himalayan desert and undoubtedly possesses the magnificence of the Himalayas, steep passes, and tiring vistas bordering a Tibetan plateau. The advantages and disadvantages are listed below,  divided by season. For you to act appropriately.

Season of Summer: SEP - OCT - NOV

The Annapurna, Langtang, and Everest regions are most crowded in the fall, possibly the finest time to trek in Nepal. Following the summer monsoons, the bright, blue skies provide a variety of breathtaking beautiful vistas of the Himalayas and nature at large. Additionally, the  Upper Dolpo hike is a beautiful time to socialize with the people and visit many lovely villages and settlements during the fall harvest season.

Season of Spring: MAR-APRL-MAY

Anywhere in the world, spring is the best time to go hiking. Whatever the universe's creatures are that have lain dormant all winter, flora and fauna awaken in the mild weather and begin feasting and reproducing. However, if there is a lot of winter snowfall, trekking during this time of year can be challenging in places like Upper Dolpo. The snowfall in the winter affects how much hiking is possible in the Upper Dolpo region during the monsoon. If there is a lot of snowfall during the winter, it may not be easy to enter the upper Dolpo by way of the high pass, which could cause your Dolpo itinerary to be changed.

Season of the monsoons: JUN-JUL-AUG

Around the world, it is not recommended to go on a trek during the monsoon season. In contrast,  Nepal is regarded as a paradise for hikers, where adventurous tourists can go hiking in the summer. Additionally, the western region of Nepal, which includes Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, and many other western frontiers, is situated in the rain-shadow areas, where there is little to no rainfall, even during the monsoon season. As a result, the high passes are free of snow and green with alpine flora covering them, and the scenery is lush at this time of year. But because of the cloudy skies and persistent rain, there is a good chance that flights into Juphal will be canceled.

How difficult is Upper Dolpo Trek?

In Upper Dolpo, trekking is regarded as challenging. Several nights are spent above  3500 m, three passes over 5000 m, and some long days of six or more hours of walking. Rest days are advised because the fact that this is a tented journey increases the physical difficulty and pain of hiking in Upper Dolpo. This is not a hike for novices or one you should attempt if this is your first trip to Nepal. However, it will be worthwhile for both seasoned trekkers and  Nepal veterans!

Upper Dolpo trek fitness

Every trekker who enjoys and wants to explore the world's stunning scenery should consider the moderate Dolpo valley trek. This walk essentially begins in the lowlands and ends in the highlands,  and as you hike through these locations, you must be physically fit. Your physical readiness to accomplish the trek is our primary concern. The typical hike prefers four to five hours of daylight. Our assistance is creating your journey dependable and spectacular without any problems in every step to step with your wealth and health because hiking up to a higher altitude requires you to be physically and psychologically prepared to succeed on the trip. Your trip's overall safety is our top priority. Therefore, you should persuade yourself to enroll in a pre-tour course that would benefit you, taking into account some physical activity like jogging, running, stair climbing,  cycling, swimming, and going to the gym.

Upper Dolpo Trek Acclimatization

The schedule for the Upper Dolpo Trek was created with a keen understanding of AMS (Acute  Mountain Sickness). Acclimatization takes place on special days. Too quick an ascent to higher elevations results in a significant medical condition that can be fatal. The amount of oxygen in the air decreases as altitude increases. For instance, there is 50% less oxygen than at sea level at altitudes above 5000 m. As a result, it takes our bodies a long time to adjust to a low-oxygen environment. AMS symptoms include mild headaches, fever, appetite loss, and stomach problems. Our routes are planned to minimize the risk of AMS. It's crucial to remember that some guests are more at risk than others.

Who may participate in the Upper Dolpo trek, and how?

Is it Safe to trek Upper Dolpo?

Due to its plain scenery, Upper Dolpo trekking is among the safer hikes in Nepal. Most of  the Upper Dolpo hike path is through picturesque Upper Dolpo settlements. There are only a few treks, such as the Upper Dolpo Upper Mustang Trek, the Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek, and the Upper.

Dolpo Mugu Trek, which spends a short time in the wilderness. The Upper Dolpo circuit treks and  Inner Dolpo trip are exceptionally safe and enjoyable hikes that begin in Dolpo and end there.

However, it will be worthwhile for both seasoned trekkers and Nepal veterans! Upper Dolpo trekking permits

Upper Dolpo permits are pricey and carefully regulated. For example, on your trip to Upper Dolpo, you pass via Lower Dolpo, so you also need to get a permit for that area. Additionally, Upper Dolpo only allows 250 foreigners to join each year.

The entrance cost to the Shey-Phoksundo National Park is Rs. 1000. Your tour operator will arrange all permits since it is required to hike with a guide on an organized tour in Upper Dolpo,  and these fees are typically included in the price of your trip.

What should you pack for the Upper Dolpo trek?

As with other Nepalese hikes, it's imperative to bring good hiking boots, a waterproof outer layer,  and additional layering and removable clothing. You won't need to bring your own tents or other specialty gear because trekking in Upper Dolpo can only be done with a guide. However, you should inquire if your trip provider  doesn't supply sleeping bags. The necessary packing supplies are listed in our  blog here.

Conclusion

Trekkers adore exploring the hidden wonderland of Upper Dolpo. The natural beauty of Dolpo  ensures that trekkers enjoy the journey, from the lofty Himalayas to the verdant, lush meadows. Locals are kind and welcoming to visitors, and they go out of their way to make your trip as  enjoyable as they can. Although Upper Dolpo was previously unknown to most people, the number  of hikers visiting Upper Dolpo has recently increased. Thus, you may encounter hikers as you travel to Dolpo.

Client Reviews

  • Best trek in Himalayas

I've just returned from a lovely 26-day trek with Mountain Rock in the Upper Dolpo. We had been planning this expedition with our group of five pals for a very long time. We learned about Shey Phoksundo's remoteness and breathtaking surroundings from one of our friends who visited there in 2015. Flying from Kathmandu and then traveling to the most distant location in Nepal was a fantastic adventure. We became aware that some areas are still unaffected by development even in this century thanks to the tiny local communities and way of life of the people in the area around Upper Dolpo. With Mountain Rock and its services, I had one of the best vacations. I urge everyone to go on an Upper  Dolpo trip at least once in their lives.

  • Dolpo Journey of this nature

I'm happy to say that I completed the Dolpo hike. I had no idea what to do, so when  Mountain Rock suggested that I take this excursion based on my interest, I naively trusted them with the tour. And I might add that I got that right. My tour guide was knowledgeable and attentive to my needs and general well-being. From the moment I was welcomed with open arms at the airport until I returned home, everything exceeded my expectations. When  I try to express my gratitude for the generous hospitality they extended to me, words fail.  I'd like to thank the team outside. I'll return shortly to make another journey of this nature.
