Embark on an adventure of a lifetime with the Manaslu Circuit Group Trek, where breathtaking landscapes, authentic cultural experiences, and a challenging 17,000-foot (5,100 m) Himalayan pass crossing await. Trust in our experienced local partners to expertly organize weekly group departures during the prime trekking seasons of spring and fall, or customize your journey with a private trek that can be arranged for any date between February and June or September to November.

Nestled in the heart of Nepal, the Manaslu Circuit Group Trek offers a truly unparalleled experience for trekkers looking for a challenge and a breathtaking view. This 14-16day trek will take you around the Manaslu Conservation Area, where you'll be greeted with stunning vistas of the eighth-highest mountain in the world.

If you're looking for an alternative to the Annapurna Circuit, the Manaslu Circuit Nepal Trek is a perfect choice. It offers a remote and less-crowded experience, as it typically sees fewer trekkers than other popular routes. The trek starts at Soti Khola, ends at Beshi Sahar, and can even be extended to 22 days with an additional side trek to the Tsum valley.

Flanked by the majestic Annapurna's to the West and the Ganesh Himal to the East, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is a true gem among the 8000-meter giants. The trek is physically demanding, culturally enriching, and scenically uplifting, making it an unforgettable experience that will stay with you forever. So, gear up and take the journey of a lifetime with the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

It is a journey through the lush terraces of rice and millet in the steamy lowlands to the majestic gorges of the Budi Gandaki, where the turquoise waters flow and the waterfalls cascade. The suspension bridges along the Manaslu trek are extraordinary in length and height. However, the yearly monsoon often presents challenges as it washes away minor bridges, leaving trekkers to traverse semi-submerged rocks.

Limited to only 400 trekkers in 1992, the Manaslu circuit trek offers a true pioneering experience. For those looking to relive the trekking of the 1980s, this trek is a visual feast from start to finish, but be warned, it requires a level of fitness to enjoy fully.

As you traverse the circuit, the path leads you North toward the snowbound Larkya La Pass, perched next to the Tibetan border. The altitude may present a challenge, but it is quickly forgotten as the views of Manaslu take your breath away. Standing at 5,167 meters/16,952 feet, the Larkya La pass is often snow-covered and icy, necessitating micro crampons on the descent. To reach the pass, a 3 am start is required to reach the highest point before the winds pick up, typically around mid-morning.

Where is Manaslu?

Cradled amidst the majestic peaks of the Mansiri Himal in the heart of Nepal, Mt. Manaslu is majestically the eighth-highest mountain in the world. Rising to a staggering 8,163 meters above sea level, this formidable peak is surrounded by the likes of Himalchuli and Ngadi. To the North, the renowned Larkya La, one of the longest passes, connects the remote villages of Bimthang and Dharamshala, adding to the allure of this natural wonder.

Mt. Manaslu is a true gem of the Himalayan range, boasting a latitude of 28.549444 degrees north and a longitude of 84.561943 degrees east. Though located a mere 119 km from Kathmandu, the trek to its summit begins with a scenic road drive up to Soti Khola.

Mount Manaslu stands tall as the highest peak in the region, located a majestic 64 km/ 40 mi east of Annapurna. This majestic mountain is a sight to behold, boasting a topographic isolation of 106 km/ 66 mi.

In 1997, the government embarked on the Manaslu Conservation Area project, with the primary objective of preserving and sustainably managing the delimited area of Manaslu. Manaslu was officially added to the Manaslu Conservation Area in December 1998 under the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act. The area is managed by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) of Nepal, spanning an impressive 1663 sq. km/ 642 sq mi.

Manaslu circuit trek Difficulties

The Manaslu circuit trek is considered a strenuous grade, making it challenging for beginner trekkers. However, with proper preparation and guidance from expert guides, anyone with a basic fitness level can conquer this trek. The trail has been improved since the 2015 earthquake, with new paths developed and teahouses now available at high camp. But the trail must still be commercialized, so proper gear and preparation are necessary. Distance, altitude, and weather conditions should also be considered when assessing this trek's difficulty level.

Manaslu circuit Trek Difficulty In Distance:

Spanning a total distance of 177 kilometers, this trek offers a diverse range of terrains, from its lowest point of 228 meters to the 8,163-meter summit of Mt. Manalsu, the world's eighth-highest peak. The standard 16-day tour itinerary includes 10-12 days of walking, with an average distance of 15-20 kilometers per day. The trek can be customized to suit individual needs and preferences and is easily accessible from Kathmandu city. The first few days on the trail can be difficult, as the Budhi Gandaki Gorge is steep and rocky, requiring physical and mental preparation. The highlight of the trek is crossing the Larkya La Pass at an altitude of 5,213 meters, a test of endurance that requires no technical skills.

Manaslu circuit trek Difficulty in Altitude:

Beginning at a low altitude of 700 meters and reaching a high altitude of 5,213 meters, the major challenge of this trek is adjusting to the high altitude. Crossing the Larkya La Pass is the most difficult part of the trail, as the trail becomes steeper, with fewer trees and more exposure to harsh elements like snow, sun, and cold wind. Altitude sickness is a potential risk for all trekkers, regardless of experience or fitness level. Consult a doctor before embarking on the trek and take necessary precautions such as walking slowly, taking regular rest breaks, and staying hydrated to avoid altitude sickness.

Manaslu circuit trek Difficulty in Weather:

The trek is affected by weather conditions such as heavy rainfall, freezing nights, hot sun, and strong winds. Pack clothing accordingly for the season in which you plan to travel. Winter is tough due to heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, while the monsoon season brings heavy rainfall and slippery, muddy trails. Spring and autumn are:

  • The best seasons for trekking.
  • Offering clear weather.
  • Stunning views of snow-capped mountains.
  • The opportunity to see rhododendron blossoms.
  • Planning your trek during these seasons helps reduce the overall difficulty level.

Manaslu circuit trek Difficulty in Training:

The Manaslu Circuit trek is a moderately strenuous and challenging journey that requires proper physical and mental preparation. Even if you consider yourself fit, we recommend training for long-distance walking, especially at higher elevations with basic facilities.

Training should include strength and endurance exercises for your back, shoulders, arms, and legs and cardiovascular fitness activities like cycling, swimming, and running. Additionally, preparing yourself mentally for the challenge is important, as mental well-being is crucial in determining how you handle stress and push through the trek. The Manaslu Circuit trek can be an enjoyable and memorable experience with proper preparation.

Manaslu Circuit Guide and Porter Cost

Total Budget For Porter and Guide= $240-$350 approx

Having a licensed trekking guide by your side is the ultimate blessing. Your guide will expertly lead you through the path, ensuring you stay on the right track. They will also take care of all your accommodation and food needs, providing you with delicious meals and comfortable resting places. And while their services come at a cost, it is a small price to pay for the peace of mind and expertise they provide. The average daily rate for a licensed guide on the Manaslu Circuit Trek is around 30 to 35 USD, including food, accommodation, and insurance for your guide.

Hiring a porter can prove to be a lifesaver for those who may struggle with the weight of their backpack and belongings. With a porter on hand, the trek becomes a comfortable and enjoyable experience rather than a challenging one.

Hiring a porter typically ranges from 20 to 25 USD per day, including expenses such as food, accommodation, and insurance. For those looking to make their tour more economical, there is also the option of hiring a porter cum guide. This individual carries your load and guides you along the trek, making the experience even more seamless and efficient. This option typically costs around 25 USD per day.

Types of Guides:

There are four trekking guides to choose from based on their skills, qualifications, and work experience.

And with an average cost of just $20-25 per day, they are a budget-friendly alternative to professional guides.

These non-licensed guides need insurance coverage to assist in obtaining trek permits. To ensure a safe and legally compliant trek, it is best to avoid these unlicensed guides and opt for a licensed and insured guide cum porter.

Porter cum guide:

Introducing Porter Cum Guides - the ultimate trekking companions who carry your luggage not only easily but also expertly guide you through the picturesque trail. These guides possess a fundamental understanding of English and boast a wealth of trekking experience. Manaslu Circuit Trek Without a Guide

Tackling Manaslu Trek without a guide is not viable, as the area between Jagat and Bhimthang has been designated a restricted zone. To guarantee a safe and successful journey, have the accompaniment of a government-authorized guide or porter with a valid license. Independent trekking in this region is strictly prohibited.

A solo journey through the rugged trails of the Manaslu Circuit Trek may seem thrilling. However, understand the inherent risks associated with such an endeavor. To safeguard trekkers from potential hazards, the Government of Nepal has strictly prohibited solo travel within the Manaslu region. Instead, security measures have been implemented through certified Manaslu trek guides and porters, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

Manaslu Circuit trek without a guided trek in the majestic Manaslu region is not an option. The only viable solution is to secure the services of a seasoned guide who will ensure your safety and enhance the overall trekking experience. In addition to the mandatory guide requirement for the Manaslu trek, the Government of Nepal has imposed additional regulations. These include:

  • The formation of a group comprising a minimum of two individuals (excluding guides and porters).
  • The procurement of all necessary permits for the Manaslu trek must be conducted through a reputable and authorized local trekking agency in Nepal.
  • Given the unavailability of a guide-less trek, it is imperative to hire a government-licensed guide from a reputable trekking company.

Group Join Manaslu Circuit Trek Accommodations Options

Total Budget for Manaslu Circuit Group Trek Accommodations- $100-$300

The Manaslu Trek offers cost-effective accommodation options, ranging from $3 to $5 at lower elevations and $7 to $8 at higher elevations. During the off-season, when tourism is at a lower level, it is possible to find rooms for under $5, even at higher elevations. Utilizing bargaining skills may also prove beneficial in securing lower prices for the Manaslu Circuit trek.

While the cost of rooms may be relatively low, additional charges may apply for amenities such as hot showers, Wi-Fi, and electricity. These additional costs may contribute to a higher overall expense for the Manaslu Circuit trek.

The Manaslu Trek offers a wide range of accommodation options for trekkers, from guesthouses in small villages to more luxurious tea houses in larger settlements.

As you venture from Kathmandu, your first stop will be the picturesque village of Soti Khola, where you can find popular guest houses such as ABC Guest House, Fulabari Guest House, and Green Valley/Tsum Valley Guest House.

As you continue to Maccha Khola, a small village in the Manaslu area, you will find accommodations such as Tsum Valley, Larkey, Everest, and Hilltop. Another essential stop on the trek is the relatively large settlement of Jagat, where you can find guest houses such as Jagat, Himalayan Tourist, Manaslu Santi, and Rubii Nala Guest House.

As you proceed to Namrung, you will find impressive guest houses such as Namrung Thakali, Namrung Guesthouse, and Nubri Four Seasons Resort. In the restricted area of Manaslu, you will find limited accommodations in Deng, such as Windy Valley, New Manaslu, and Shangrilla Cottage.

The small village of Lo is another essential stop on the trek, with guest houses such as Majestic Manaslu, Tashi Dalek Guest House, Namaste Guest House, and Lama Guest House. The trek's final stop, Sama Gaun, offers better facilities than Lo, with more than half a dozen guesthouses.

As you move towards the more remote areas of Manaslu, including Samdo, Dharmasala, and Bimthang, you will find tea houses with varying amenities, such as Wi-Fi and hot showers. Once you cross the Larke La Pass, you will find better tea houses with more amenities. In Dharapani, the final destination of the trek, you will find a variety of great tea houses with rooms that even have attached bathrooms.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Cost- Wifi

At Manaslu Guest Houses, guests can enjoy the convenience of wireless internet access in all accommodations. Despite being situated in a remote location, travelers can stay connected to their loved ones without interruption. However, internet speed in the Manaslu region is relatively slow, making it suitable for basic tasks such as calls and texts but not for streaming high-definition videos. Additionally, wifi access costs range from $1 to $3.

Total Budget: $1-$30

Manaslu Circuit Trek Cost- Electricity

Certain amenities, such as electricity, may not be readily available in certain regions. Places at lower altitudes, such as Soti Khola, Bhimthang, and Dharapani, may offer electrical outlets in the rooms for your convenience. However, if this is not the case, guests at Hotel Manaslu can charge their electronic devices in the dining hall. The owner of the tea house or the receptionist will assist with charging your phone, but there may be an additional cost for this service. Trekking in the Himalayas is not a budget-friendly endeavor and various amenities, such as hot showers, wifi, and electricity, may not be included in your Manaslu trek package. Therefore, we recommend inquiring about these details with your travel agency in Nepal before booking.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Food Cost

Manaslu, a remote and secluded region of the country, poses challenges regarding transportation and accessibility. The poor road conditions and lack of reliable transit make transporting goods, including food supplies, to the area easier. As a result, the cost of food in Manaslu is significantly higher than in the capital city of Kathmandu, and the menu options are limited. Budgeting around USD 10-15 per meal is advisable, resulting in a daily total of USD 25-35.

Despite these challenges, the region offers a unique culinary experience. The vegetables served in local restaurants, and tea houses are typically organic and freshly harvested, adding a special touch to every meal. A typical breakfast in Manaslu consists of steamed rice, lentils, seasonal vegetables, and pickles, providing a healthy and satisfying start to the day, especially for those embarking on a trek.

Total Budget: $10- $40 per day

Manaslu Circuit Trek Drink Cost

Total Budget- $5-$20 per day

The cost of beverages such as tea and coffee are comparable in the mountainous region, with a slight decrease in price at the Manaslu region due to its lower altitude. The pricing range for these drinks in the Manaslu region is as follows: Tea at USD 2.5 to USD 4, Coffee at USD 3 to USD 5, Water and Soda at USD 2 to USD 5, and Beer (600ml) at USD 5 to USD 8. Additionally, the cost of drinking water in the Manaslu region is relatively affordable, with prices ranging from NPR 200 (USD 2) at lower elevations to NPR 400 (USD 4) at higher elevations. The water in the mountains is typically sourced from natural springs, making it clean and pure. However, carry water purification tablets, drops, or a water filter to ensure optimal water quality. This will not only ensure that you are consuming clean water but also save you money in the long run.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Transportation Cost

Total Budget- $100-$300

Accessing the remote and rugged terrain of the Manaslu region presents a unique challenge for travelers. The roads in the area need to be fully developed, and the lack of infrastructure and off-road trails make it difficult to connect with the outside world. Despite these obstacles, there are still two main ways to enter the region.

One option is to take a local bus. This mode of transportation is adventurous and cost-effective, with fares averaging around NPR 100 (USD 10) per person for a one-way trip. The exact price applies for the return journey from Besisahar to Kathmandu.

Alternatively, travelers can opt for a private jeep. This option is best suited for those who prioritize comfort over adventure. The cost of private jeep ranges from NPR 15,000 to NPR 20,000 (USD 150 to USD 200). While the price may seem high, it can be shared among travelers, making it a more cost-effective option.

Choosing between a local bus and a private jeep depends on the individual traveler's preferences and priorities. Both options offer unique experiences and provide access to the stunning Manaslu region.

Manaslu Circuit Group Trek Permit

To embark on the Manaslu Circuit Trek, trekkers must obtain three essential permits:

  • The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit
  • The Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) permit
  • The Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

Each of these permits serves a unique purpose and is required for different aspects of the trek.

The ACAP and MCAP permits can be applied for and collected by trekkers from offices in Kathmandu, Pokhara, or Besisahar. However, the RAP permit is restricted and can only be issued via a licensed trekking agency in Nepal. This is because the Manaslu trekking trail was opened as a restricted area in 1992 and has maintained this status ever since. As such, independent and solo trekking is not allowed in Manaslu.

Obtaining these permits is mandatory for all trekkers interested in embarking on the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Please do so to avoid being denied entry to the trekking trail or facing penalties. By working with a reputable trekking agency, trekkers can ensure they have all the necessary permits before setting off on their journey.

Restricted Area Permit for Manaslu

Obtaining a Manaslu trek permit is mandatory for all trekkers from Jagat to Sama Gaun. Once you have traversed the picturesque village of Sama, an additional entry permit, known as the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), is required. The Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP) cost is determined by the number of days spent between Jagat and Dharapani. The final checkpoint for obtaining the RAP is located in Sama Gaun.

From September to November, the cost for the Manaslu RAP is USD 100 per person for the initial seven days and an additional USD 15 per person per day for each day after that. From December to August, the cost is reduced to USD 75 per person for the first seven days and an additional USD 10 per person per day from the eighth day onwards. Please note that a printed photograph is not required for the Manaslu RAP, as it will be uploaded online and published on the permit.

Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP Permit)

The starting point for acquiring this permit is in Philim, where the MCAP officially begins. The permit cost remains consistent throughout the year, with a standard fee of USD 30 per person. Furthermore, there are no variations in pricing based on the number of days spent within the MCAP.

In addition to the standard fee, a printed photograph is also required when obtaining the MCAP permit. This serves as a means of identification and ensures that the correct individual is granted access to the conservation area. Failure to provide a printed photograph may result in the denial of the permit. Therefore, it is crucial to have this documentation readily available when applying for the Manaslu trek permit.

Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP Permit)

This permit is mandatory for all trekkers traversing the route from Dharapani to Beshi Sahar. The permit fee remains constant throughout the year at USD 30 per person. There are no variations in the price, regardless of the duration of time spent within the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP).

In addition to the Manaslu trek permit, a printed photograph is required for the ACAP permit. Once both the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and these two conservation area entry permits have been obtained, there is no further need to acquire a TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) card unless your journey takes you to the Annapurna Circuit from Dharapani.
