  • Seasonally dependent gear, appropriate for cold, wet, or variable mountain weather. Take only what is essential to make it bearable to carry.
  • Annapurna Base Camp trek has extremely well-beaten paths, and you will encounter plenty of other travellers, especially in lodges as well as on major trekking routes. In case you do not enjoy-cluttered trekking experience, employ other paths to trekking locations in Nepal.
  • The Himalayan weather is unpredictable. The itinerary can be changed for safety if there is bad weather.

Shorter Duration ABC Trek but With the Same Highlights in Less Than a Week

Opting for a shorter Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on the highlights that put the Annapurna region on the map. A shorter trek will get you the best parts of the trek in a week and still allow you to experience the amazing view of the Himalayan giants, local culture, and special features of the landscape.

Pokhara (Before and After the Trek)

You will start your Express trek to Annapurna Base Camp 5 Days in Pokhara, Nepal's stunning lakeside city, and end your trek in Pokhara. Pokhara is a great place to pick up any last minute gear before your trek.

It also gives you a chance to enjoy the relaxing small town atmosphere of Lake Town before your trek. It is a nice place to take it easy and relax at Phewa Lake and reflect on your trek in the Himalayas after you are done.

Jhinu Danda

With Mount Annapurna Base Camp Guided Trek 5 Days You actually walk through Jhinu Danda on the way to base camp. It is famous for its natural hot springs. The  hot springs of Jhinu provide a good resting place for trekkers to unwind and ease their sore muscles .

Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC)

On the trek you will spend the night or have a stop at Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700m) where the panorama and close ups of the revered Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) peak and other surrounding peaks, is dramatic. The view changes from lush forests to a rocky high-altitude sanctuary.

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC)

The Express trek to Annapurna Base Camp 5 Days' achievement is allowed at Last as you reach the Annapurna Base Camp at the height of 4,130 meters.

The suspension of disbelief comes to full view as you depart the serenity of the trees in the valley below, and the giants, a full 360-degree mountain landscape with views of the majestic Annapurna I, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli, entirely surround you. Sunrises and sunsets will be dazzling and remain firmly in your memory.

Trekking into the Annapurna Conservation Area

The trail leads into Nepal's largest protected area - the Annapurna Conservation Area. The trails traverse rhododendron and bamboo forests with many views of suspension bridges, wildlife, etc. The amount of plant and animal biodiversity seems endless.

Culture and Wildlife on Annapurna Base Camp Trek

People and Culture

The Short Annapurna Sanctuary Trek takes you into the very heart of Nepal’s cultural vibrancy. By passing through traditional Gurung and Magar villages, such as Ghandruk and Chhomrong, you will see their contemporary lives shaped by deeply-rooted centuries of tradition, cultural customs and heritage, agrarian societies, and spiritual ideologies.

The Gurung people of the region are also renowned for their hospitality, hence welcoming trekkers into their midst not only with their local festivals but also traditional dance  and warm “Namaste” or equivalent welcomes. Sharing a meal, particularly dal bhat and gundruk, is part of the fun and flavour of the authentic Himalayan culinary experience.

Along the way you will also meet Magar, Tamang, Thakali, Brahmin, and Chhetri communities, each with their language, festivals and cultural traditions.

Spiritual Heritage and Sacred Sites

The Quick Annapurna Base Camp Trek is culturally spiritually meaningful, with small chortens, monasteries and prayer flags dotted amongst the route.

Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) has sacred meaning to both Hindus and Buddhists, and many local legends refer to gods and treasures, both valued and ancient, that are allegedly hidden away in the sanctuary.

People on the trail are noted to partake in rituals to appease mountain spirits, and trekkers are frequently reminded they must be respectful of how the local people believe and practice.

Wildlife and Biodiversity

The Annapurna Conservation Area is the largest protected area in Nepal and an area of high biodiversity with over 1200 species of flowering plants, 105 mammals, and 518 species of birds.

As you track through rhododendron forests, bamboo forests, and alpine meadows, it is definitely advisable to keep your eyes peeled for the Himalayan flora and fauna, which include Himalayan black bears, thars, musk deer, barking deer, and, if you are lucky, possibly a red panda or even a snow leopard at higher elevations. That being said, the colourful flora and fauna certainly mean being on the trail is an exciting proposition every day.

Is The Rapid ABC Trek Distance the same as Long Annapurna Base Himalaya Trek Distance?

The Rapid Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek is less distance overall as you are walking approximately 50 total km, as you are following the shortest path right to ABC, starting in Jhinu Danda, and usually not making the additional stops.

A longer ABC trek is further away by the distance travelled to ABC, usually not a direct route and going through places such as Ghorepani, and Poon Hill, among others, and is usually 75-85 total km.

In order to give you a better idea of the distance difference:

  • Shortened ABC Trek: ~50 km, travelling a direct route to ABC.
  • Long ABC Trek (to include Ghorepani/Poon Hill): ~75-85 km, travelling additional scenic/cultural stops.

Both treks end up at the same base camp, but the longer trek has more km in comparison, and you have more highlights as you travel to ABC. Another popular short trek to Annapurna Base Camp Trek is 7 days Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Day to Day Info

We will have breakfast in Pokhara before we begin our delightful drive to officially start the Express trek to Annapurna Base Camp 5 Days. We'll enjoy a lovely, relaxing drive along terraced hillsides and small villages, and we will have a short rest stop before we get on the trek.

The day will begin with a slight uphill trek, crossing suspension bridges as views change and up through forests and terraced fields. After 3-5 hours of trekking, we will be arriving at Chhomrong, which is a beautiful Gurung village close to the Annapurna South and Machapuchare.

This will be a guaranteed lunch stop because the views are amazing amongst the hills. After your lunch trekkers hike  down the steps to Chhomrong Khola, and then we will trek steeply up through forests and reach Sinuwa. Dinner and overnight stay in Sinuwa tea house with amazing mountain views and quiet location.

  • Lunch- Dinner
  • 6-7 hours
  • 2,340 meters

After an excellent breakfast in Sinuwa, we continue trekking through the thick bamboo and rhododendron forest. It remains alive with chirping birds and, depending on the season, bright red flowers, as we descend to Bamboo, a nice little settlement in the bamboo stands and the likely stopping point for most trekkers who stop for tea.

We will climb from Bamboo and pass through a few settlements, Dovan and Himalaya, where the alpine scenery becomes a little more rugged. Most trekkers will have lunch at one of these sites, and some will have a view of a tumbling waterfall or cliff.

Final hours of the hike include a steep incline up to Deurali, as we also stop at the magnificent mystical Hinku Cave; truly a hidden gem of this trek. Arriving at Deurali, we are surrounded by large walls of mountains, and the sound of the Modi Khola river, where you can have dinner and rest.

  • Teahouse
  • Breakfast- Lunch- Dinner
  • 5-6 hours
  • 3,230 meters

Our Mount Annapurna Base Camp Guided Trek 5 Days resumes  after breakfast from Deurali where trekkers take a gradual climb through alpine territory and as we climb the panorama widens revealing more and more glaciers and snow fields. Continuing on this trail, we pass Bagar, and arrive at Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC).

The camp offers the amazing views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) and many other Himalayan giants. The last climb to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) is unreal as we entered the natural amphitheater surrounded by mountains, with Annapurna I, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.

The spectacular views culminate when we see Annapurna II (7936m) and Annapurna IV (7525m) join the ranks of the world's 8,000 m peaks. Upon arrival at ABC, you are rewarded with 360 degree views of the large mountains and associated glaciers. You will have dinner and sleep at a teahouse.

  • Teahouse
  • Breakfast- Lunch- Dinner
  • 7-8 hours
  • 4,130 meters

Trekking out of Annapurna Base Camp starts with an early breakfast before the descent begins. Since trekkers will be heading back down the same route, the trail passes through Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Deurali. One of the positive aspects of descending is that the trekkers get new views of the valley and a different perspective of the peaks that surround them.

The trekkers will move further down their route past Himalaya, Dovan and Bamboo. There will be a chance to stop for lunch at one of the numerous tea houses along the way, so trekkers generally have lunch somewhere on the way to Bamboo. Descending is better for the lungs but can be hard on the knees. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Bamboo.

  • Teahouse
  • Breakfast- Lunch- Dinner
  • 5-6 hours

The last breakfast will be at Bamboo before returning together through the bamboo and rhododendron forest. The trail climbs to Sinuwa and then descends steeply to Chhomrong, a good place for trekkers to relax, eat snack lunch and look at the mountains for the last time.

Then continue down to Jhinu Danda, the place famous for the natural hot springs by the river; what an amazing experience after so much hiking and working those legs. After lunch, you will return to Pokhara by vehicle through the fertile terraced fields and colourful villages.

Your Rapid Annapurna Base Camp Trek will end in Pokhara with a celebration dinner where you can share experiences and talk about all the different landscapes and people you saw together in the Annapurna area.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek Temperature and Weather Considerations

Spring (March-May)

  • Maximum Day Temperature: 10–20°C
  • Minimum Night Temperature: 0–5°C
  • Low: Around 0°C
  • High: Up to 20°C

Generally, Spring is one of the best seasons for Annapurna Base Camp Short Hiking 5 Days. The days are warm and clear, with flowering rhododendrons and many different landscapes in bloom. Nights can still be cool at higher altitudes. However, the weather and conditions will typically be stable in the spring, which makes for pleasant trekking conditions.

Summer/Monsoon (June–August)

  • Maximum Day Temperature: 15–25°C
  • Minimum Night Temperature: 5–10°C
  • Low: 5°C
  • High: 25°C

Rain, rain and rain! You can expect torrential rains, clouds and leech-infested trails. While the scenery is definitely green & lush, the paths can be very wet and slippery; landslides are common during the summer months. Visibility is often poor, and the humidity can be very high.

Autumn (September–November)

  • Maximum Day Temperature: 10–20°C
  • Minimum Night Temperature: 0–5°C
  • Low: 0°C
  • High: 20°C

Autumn offers the best mountain views and clearest skies. The temperatures are moderate, and the rainfall is minimal. Autumn is arguably the most well-known trekking season in regard to the stability of the weather and relative scenery.

Winter (December–February)

  • Daytime Temperature: 5–10°C
  • Nighttime Temperature: -10–0°C
  • Low: -10°C
  • High: 10°C

Winter brings freezing temperatures predominantly at night. The trails are likely to be icy in sections due to the possibility of snow above 3,000 meters. Overall, there are usually fewer people walking, and scenery can be very rewarding if the weather is acceptable, but it is always important to be well-layered.

Accommodations

For the duration of your 5-day Annapurna Base Camp trek, you'll be accommodated in teahouses, some basic lodges and a couple of campsites. Teahouses are the most common form of lodging, and provide very basic twin rooms, with basic bedding which is usually single bed sheet, blanket and pillow.

The rooms are usually small and cosy and keep in mind that almost all teahouses will be unheated, so we recommend bringing a warm sleeping bag. Bathrooms are shared and usually a mixture of squat and western toilets; many teahouses will have hot showers for an extra fee. However, hot showers might not be a guaranteed availability at higher elevations.

Some of the destinations along the route, will offer a variety of accommodations, including a few tourist-class private rooms and some lodges with en suite bathrooms.

However, as you gain elevation options become more basic and during high trekking season it is possible that you may have to share a room. Of course, there are some more luxurious lodges in the lower areas that provide private accommodation if you wish.

Meals on Annapurna Base Camp Trek (5 Days)

Meals are typically included in the Rapid Annapurna Base Camp Trek, which helps keep you healthy and energized. While on the trail, tea houses usually serve various tasty, filling and nutritious meals, including breakfast, lunch and dinner, which cover most tastes and dietary requirements. Below is the ABC trek Foods and Drinks types you will likley get.

Breakfast

Breakfasts usually offer porridge and eggs (boiled or fried, or as an omelette), toast, pancakes and local cuisine (Tibetan bread or momo (dumplings) and typically some hot drink (tea, coffee, or hot lemon water) to start your day off warm and replenished.

Lunch

Lunch is usually a hearty meal that provides you with the fuel for continuing the trip.  Lunch options can be dal bhat (lentil soup and rice), chicken or vegetable soup, noodles or sandwiches. There is generally fruit and some snacks like nuts or biscuits to help keep our energy levels elevated.

Dinner

Most dinners are another hearty, warm plate of food like dal bhat, vegetable curry and rice or pasta. There are several tea houses along the trekking route that offer soups and stews too. A hearty bowl of soup goes a long way to keep up your energy after a long day hiking. It's normal to have a hot drink like herbal tea or hot chocolate to help unwind before going to bed.

Difficulty Level of 5 Days ABC Trekking

For Beginners

Generally, active travelers with good fitness and some trekking grade experience will find Trekking to Annapurna Base 5 Days moderately challenging but achievable to complete the 5 day ABC trek.

The trek is challenging because and requires fitness to endure the trekking days, balance and adaptability on varied terrain, and flexibility to cope with the fast altitude gain. ABC is a beautiful trek, but if you are opting for the trek as a beginner and without any preparations it's better not to attempt to complete the hike.

For Active Travellers

Active travellers with good fitness and prior trekking experience will find the 5-day ABC trek a moderate challenge, but feasible. The ABC trek route requires a good fitness level to endure the day's trekking, a sense of balance and traction on uneven and variable terrain and quick ability to adapt to rapid altitude change.

ABC is an incredible trek, but it is not too demanding if you are prepared physically and mentally to complete this satisfying experience as safely as possible and within the time limits of the trek. Therefore for active trekkers ABC Trek in 5 days is suitable and achievable.

How Fit do you need to be for abc trek 5 days?

The ABC Trekking and Hiking Tour Nepal will require a moderate to high level of fitness because of the short, fast itinerary featuring long days of hiking and steep ascents at altitude. You will be hiking for 6–8 hours every day over rugged, rocky, and often steep terrain, with massive amounts of ascending and descending each day.

Cardiovascular endurance is extremely important. Build up your endurance for multi-day trekking with a combination of running, swimming, cycling, or brisk hiking consistently to build the aerobic fitness required to be able to last for the multi-day trek.

Leg and core strength are also important to be able to deal with the endless stone staircases, the steep climbs, and the fact that you have a loaded backpack. Squats, lunges, and planks are some of the exercises you can do to develop strength in the legs and core.

Be sure to also practice on hills or do stair training with a loaded backpack so that you can prepare your body for the rigours of trekking and develop strength for the anticipated systems.

Minimum hitting the training for 8 to 12 weeks prior to your trek; increased intensity and duration will ensure you'll have a better chance of being better prepared for your trek.

The experience of acclimatization is more important than anything. If you can do it and get in some hiking with more altitude, you'll become used to adjusting to lower oxygen levels with more ease.

Flexibility and balance work, such as yoga or stretching, will promote injury prevention and contribute to the overall comfort needed for trekking.

Toilets are basic, either squat or western style, and shared with other guests depending on location. Toilet cleanliness will vary from lodge to lodge; we suggest you carry your own Toiletries while trekking in Nepal.

Mobile Network

  • Availability: Predominantly Nepal Telecom

Mobile coverage is typically available across most routes, although the coverage in the most remote areas is very weak. To ensure that you have the greatest potential for connectivity, we encourage you to purchase local SIM cards and data packages.

Laundry Facility

  • Access: Rare; existing only in villages at low altitude (i.e. Ulleri, Chhomrong)
  • Cost: Additional cost; varies by lodge, location

Laundry services are generally uncommon on the Annapurna Base Camp (ABSC) trek because their availability is limited at high elevations. At low-altitude villages (e.g. Ulleri), you may find teahouses that offer limited laundry services depending on the time of year for an additional charge, but again, it is not guaranteed and will vary by the lodge, time of year and whether the owner offers it.

Client Reviews

  • Unforgettable Himalayan Adventure with MountainRock Treks

I had a unique experience with MountainRock Treks to Annapurna Base Camp (a 5-day trek). From the first meeting, our guide had an eye out for everyone, making sure all was comfortably understood and managed and attempting to keep everyone's spirits up, which was not easy given the uphill walk. The mountain scenery was breathtaking, in particular the sunrises. The chats and friendships made with other trekkers were also very for me. The tea houses were in great spots, were warm and welcoming and had great food after a day of walking. Most importantly for me was that I felt safe and taken care of throughout the trip, and left with a great sense of gratitude for Nepal.

  • Perfectly Organized Trek with Knowledgeable Guides

MountainRock Treks was above and beyond everything I had expected for the ABC 5-day trek. The guide was very informed of the area; not only he told us about the surrounding culture but also nature as we trekked along. The logistics were flawless, from our transport connections to our accommodations, the pace was very manageable, and each night, we had a briefing session giving us a preview of the next day. I feel the groups appreciated the attention given to detail, as it freed us up to just take in the beauty of the experience and deepen relationships with each other. I would definitely recommend MountainRock Treks to anyone seeking an organized and rich trekking experience.
