In a tragic incident, a female hiker was found dead on the Thorangla Pass trail in Manang, Nepal. The guide in Pokhara reported the incident to the police at 8 am. The deceased has been identified as a Korean citizen, approximately 45 years of age, and her body was found in Thongphedi at an altitude of about 5400 meters.
According to District Police Office Manang Police Inspector Ramkrishna Shrestha, the woman may have gone on a walk without a guide, which may have led to her death due to high altitude. Guides have speculated that the woman died due to high altitude.
The Manang police reached the spot after receiving the information and confirmed that the woman was dead. The body is currently in Manang, and coordination is being done to send it to Kathmandu. Similarly, the police said that two other bodies of foreigners were also found on the same footpath, and preparations are being made to send them in one lump sum.
The Korean tourist was found dead around 200 meters down Thorong La Pass under the Annapurna trekking route.
According to Chief District Officer Suprabha Dhungel Khanal, it has come to their knowledge that the tourist had turned up to Manang alone without coordination with any agencies. "Tragic incidents have occurred with tourists while visiting the area without coordination with porter and agency. Had the tourist come to visit with proper know-how of the area, coordinated efforts could be made for saving the life", she added.
A police team deputed to rescue the tourist had to return halfway due to altitude sickness. It is essential for trekkers and hikers to be aware of the risks and to coordinate with agencies and guides to ensure a safe and enjoyable trekking experience. The authorities have urged trekkers to be well-informed about the area and to take necessary precautions before embarking on a trek.
In conclusion, the deaths of the two Korean tourists are a tragic reminder of the dangers of trekking in high-altitude areas. It is crucial for trekkers to be well-informed and to coordinate with agencies and guides to ensure a safe and enjoyable trekking experience. The authorities have urged trekkers to be well-informed about the area and to take necessary precautions before embarking on a trek. Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased.
Death Rate While Trekking in Nepal:-
The majestic peaks of Nepal are a sight to behold. They rise to the heavens, beckoning adventurers and thrill-seekers to test their mettle against the rugged terrain. But make no mistake; these mountains can be a formidable force. The high altitudes and unpredictable weather patterns can make for a treacherous journey. Even the most experienced climbers and trekkers must be prepared for the worst.
The thin air at these elevations can make breathing difficult, and the cold temperatures can quickly lead to hypothermia. The strong winds can whip up dangerous storms that catch climbers off guard, leaving them stranded and at the mercy of the elements. The rocky terrain can be treacherous, with loose rocks and steep inclines, making progress slow and difficult.
A review of trekking deaths in Nepal from 1984 to mid-1987 showed a death rate of 15/per 100,000 trekkers. Altitude sickness accounted for 13% of these deaths, highlighting the importance of proper preparation and acclimatization for trekkers.
Recently, our team followed up on this study by compiling the number and causes of trekking deaths in Nepal from mid-1987 through 1991. The fatalities were 40 out of 275,950 trekkers (death rate 14/100,000). Illness accounted for 14 deaths, trauma was the cause of 12 deaths, altitude sickness was the cause of 10 deaths, 3 people were found dead after being reported missing, and one person is still missing and presumed dead.
According to the sources, eight out of 10 altitude sickness deaths occurred in organized trekking groups, even though only 40% of trekkers were in organized groups. This highlights the importance of proper guidance and leadership in organized trekking groups and the need for individual trekkers to plan and prepare for their trek correctly.
Additionally, four people were reported to have died from heart attacks, and three died from apparent diabetic ketoacidosis above 4000 meters in altitude till now. These deaths emphasize the importance of medical screening and proper medication management for trekkers with pre-existing medical conditions.
Trekking in Nepal is a relatively safe holiday that currently attracts more than 60,000 people yearly. However, monitoring the causes of death among trekkers can help generate advice that could make trekking even safer. This includes proper preparation and acclimatization, guidance and leadership in organized trekking groups, and medical screening and medication management for trekkers with pre-existing medical conditions. We encourage all trekkers to consider these factors when planning their next trek in Nepal. The rewards of reaching the summit are incredible. The breathtaking views, the sense of accomplishment, and the feeling of being truly alive are all worth the risks. But it's important to remember that these mountains are not to be taken lightly. Proper planning, preparation, and respect for the mountain's power are crucial for a successful and safe journey.
