Upper Mustang Bike Tour takes you to the untouched and beautiful land of Upper Mustang, situated at the Nepal-Tibet border. Essential Info

When is the Best Season For the Upper Mustang Bike Tour?

The best part about the Upper Mustang Bike Tour 12 Day package is that travelers can go on it at any time of the year. Most of the treks in Nepal take place during the spring months and harvest time. However, you do not need to choose the best time for this tour as Mustang is located toward the northern side of the Himalayas.

One advantage of the Upper Mustang Tour in Bike Package is that this region generally receives very little monsoon rainfall like other parts of the country. This is why, no matter your bike tour time here, you are less likely to encounter muddy, slippery, or avalanche-prone trails during the monsoon season in Mustang. Plus, you're guaranteed to enjoy pristine mountain views.

Still, if you are determined to take an Upper Mustang Bike Tour 12 Day at the best time, travel in Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). Also, avoid the seasons like monsoons (June to August) and winter months (December, January, and February).

Spring Season:

The Spring season in Nepal, starting from March to May is one of the best times for your Upper Mustang Bike Tour. Especially talking about the upper Mustang area in spring; this region experiences temperatures ranging between 16 to 22 degrees Celsius. Similarly, some characteristics of this region in spring are vivid mountain views, Clear views, and Blue Sky. If you travel in May, you get to experience the famous Himalayas festival of the region, i.e., the Tibetan Buddhist festival of Tiji in Lo Manthang.

Autumn Season:

The Autumn season in Nepal starts in September and lasts till November. During these seasons, travelers experience cool weather and temperatures ranging from 2 to 20 degrees Celsius on your Upper Mustang Trip on Motorbike. Moreover, the region's temperature at night falls to -4 degrees Celsius or lower. This season boasts pleasing winds with clear views of the mountains, like the Annapurna range, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri.

How is The Road Condition on the Upper Mustang Bike Tour?

The Motorbike Tour in Upper Mustang's road conditions mixes paved and off-road sections, requiring adaptability for smooth rides and rough terrain. The road conditions around Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara, Nagarkot, and Bandipur are great. Similarly, the Driving trials around Marpha and Jomsom are well constructed.

But once you pass from Marpha and Jomsom on your Upper Mustang Bike Tour, you pass through the Kagbeni village to reach the Muktinath temple. Kagbeni village marks the border between Nepal's Upper and Lower Mustang, thrilling the journey.

This means that as you travel from the lower Mustang region to the upper one, your Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour experience becomes more thrilling and adventurous. Moreover, the road becomes rough, with sections of off-road riding, and you'll encounter patches of thick, dry mud and stones. This makes the Upper Mustang motorbike tour an exciting adventure in Nepal. Given the current road conditions, it's best to use dirt bikes for this trip.

The road may be rough but is generally wide, offering a great experience as you come across several villages. There are many small teahouses and small dining places en route to the Upper Mustang Bike Tour 12 Day to add the positivity aspect, finally riding towards the infamous settlements of the region, ie. Lo Manthang.

Lo Manthang is the final village in the Upper Mustang Trip in Motorbike. However, if you're up for it, you can ride to the border gate between Nepal and China.

Accommodations on 12 Day Upper Mustang Bike Tour

The 12-Day Upper Mustang Bike tour is a tea house accommodation bike tour with basic accommodations totally different from the hotels you are staying at in Kathmandu. These tea houses you stay on your Upper Mustang Bike tour are a very basic type of mountain hotel traditionally run by the locals living in the region. Similarly, these houses are made up of mud and brick and are mostly painted white.

These tea houses of the Upper Mustang Bike tour are very cozy and small, with only very few rooms available. In Lo Manthang, the newer concrete tea houses are tall and can host numerous trekkers. The rooms typically have two single beds and not much furniture. While they provide pillows and blankets, they may not be as fluffy and warm, so bringing a sleeping bag for extra comfort and hygiene is a good idea.

Do not expect much facilities than a room with a bed, blankets, pillow or a small table as the area you reach on your Upper Mustang Bike tour is very remote. Also, very few teahouses in the region, especially in lower areas, have attached bathrooms. The rest of the tea houses have communal toilets/bathrooms with squat seats. So ensure you bring your toilet paper and portable soap because not all tea houses provide them.  Also, remember that the showers in the teahouse are shared, as you won't find any attached bathrooms in the upper areas of the Mustang.

Foods On the Upper Mustang Bike Tour

The food options for the Bike Tour of Upper Mustang are the same as those in the trekking trails. Still, due to the influence of the Tibetan Buddhist community living in the region, you will find more local food choices, such as Chinese/Tibetan dishes, during the road trip. The food choices in the region are limited to basic, so do not expect the lavish foods found in cities like Pokhara and Kathmandu.

During the Bike Upper Mustang Tour, you'll often encounter a popular and satisfying meal known as "Dal Bhat." This meal is always consumed, so it's considered the national dish of Nepal. It consists of lentil soup and rice served with a vegetable curry, a staple in the Nepali diet. This hearty dish is a favorite among trekkers because it's filling and affordable, costing around USD 4 for either lunch or dinner.

For breakfast on the 12-Day Upper Mustang Bike Tour, you'll find a variety of Western dishes available, such as porridge, pancakes, eggs, jam, and honey in the lower regions. Don't miss trying the fluffy Tibetan bread if you want something different. Another regional specialty worth sampling is Thukpa, a Tibetan noodle soup quite famous in this area.

Permits Required For 12 Day Upper Mustang Bike Tour

For your 12-Day Upper Mustang Bike Tour, travelers must have two permits, i.e., RAP and ACAP. Upper Mustang, the historical kingdom of Lo, has been accessible to foreign trekkers since 1992 under restricted conditions, which remain in effect today. For both treks and tours in the Upper Mustang, you must acquire two specific permits through a licensed Nepali trekking agency: the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit and the Restricted Area Permit (RAP).

Restricted Area Permit  (RAP)

Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour takes you to Upper Mustang, a restricted area located close to the Tibetan border. This destination has been restricted for border security and to protect the unique culture and traditional flooring in the area from tourism's adverse effects.

These restricted permits in the region apply to special areas you reach on your Bike Tour of Upper Mustang, such as Lo Manthang Rural Municipality (Wards 1 to 5), Baragung Mukti Chetra Rural Municipality (Ward 3 and Satang Village in Ward 5), and Lo-Gekar Damodar Kunda Rural Municipality (Wards 1 to 5).

The cost of the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for the Upper Mustang varies depending on the number of days spent in these restricted regions. For foreigners, it's $500 for the first ten days and $50 for each additional day. Nepali nationals can get this permit free of charge.

Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP)

The Motorbike Tour in Upper Mustang takes you via the trail through the vast Mustang region, located entirely in the Annapurna conservation area. Therefore, this bike tour requires an additional trekking permit called ACAP. The permit fees for this bike tour are as follows:

  • For citizens of SAARC nations: It costs NRs. 1000 per person (about US$ 10).
  • For individuals from other countries: The fee is NRs. 3000 per person (around US$ 30).
